Hello. I am interested in buying a 3 1/2 12ga. I have heard alot about both the benelli nova and the stoeger. I was just wondering if anybody could tel me more about both. Thanks

I apologize for not answering your question and perhaps offering information to which you may already be privy, but...

Many folks, and I happen to be one, feel that in the rare circumstances where a 3 1/2 is justified, a 10 gauge will do a far better job.

i agree my 10 gauge will eat any 12 gauge 3.5 plus kick a lot less,if you dont beleive me go on the canadian widgeon page and ask fall flight ,they seen how my 10 gauge can reach out and nock em down vs there 3.5 12 ,they shooot a ton of geese, the cost of 10 gauge steel is almost the same as 3.5 steel.i have some very petit hunting friends and now they shoot 10 gauge browning golds,if you pass shoot or late season, geese are harder to kill step up to a 3.5 preferably to a ten,i also use a paternmaster choke and t shot ,yes t shot coming back check the ammo manufacturers

I really like my Benelli Nova, no problems with it at all... I echo the comments about 3.5 inch shells, you'll probably use them very little, BUT, the option is nice to have...

Cheers
Jay

If one allready has a 3 inch 12 and feels the need for bigger, I agree the 10 will do a better job. If one wants one gun to do it all, the 3 1/2 is a good choice. Light enough for upland, chambered for the big one and versatile enough to shoot light target loads for fun.

Prefer Benelli to Stoeger:D

Not what he asked, but I agree wholeheartedly.

You are right! I am not sure what he asked? Benelli and/or Stoeger? and 3 1/2 12 gauge? He never did say what purpose?

moose 565 please re state your question and be specific with your intended purpose and expectations. It is cold here in Alberta and a lot of us are bored because we are not getting enough:( shooting that is:D and would only be too happy to offer our opinions.:D:D

Don't know much about the Stoeger but the Nova is a gun that I've played with a little. Just be sure you toughen up if you intend to shoot a lot of 3-1/2" shells through a Nova. It is without question the hardest kicking shotgun I've ever fired. Shooting a 3-1/2" shell is a snot bubbling experience. It's not a surprise they sell a factory recoil reducer for this gun.

I've shot all sorts of 3" mag through a very light Remington 870. They feel like trap loads compared to the Nova with 3-1/2".

snot bubbling? That's an endearing term:eek: C.B. you are right! and you are a braver man than I. I just tried them with heavy dove loads and knew I could not go all the way to 3 1/2. If I felt that way inclined I would get a Beretta with one of those ugly pads.:D

For a basic workhorse model, The Stoeger is good. The one I purchased fires all three shell sizes, came with 5 chokes, and only cost me $400, all taxes in! It's even got a decent camo job and a nice pistol style grip to the stock. I can't remember the model off the top of my head. If you're looking for a decent shotgun though, you can't go wrong with the Stoeger. Even if you use it for a few years and want to sell it, someone will buy it off you for sure.

Just remembered; it was the P-350. I used it for turkey and ducks last year and loved the entire feel of firing the thing. I own other guns that look nicer and cost more, but I like the simple elegance of taking this Stoeger as a workhorse field gun that didn't cost me my left testicle! LOL!

i know guys that have been bying those stoegers and have had nothing but troubles. Do yourself a favor and buy the benelli. You wont be dissapointed. as far as the 3 1/2s. smokem if ya gottem.

What troubles? I've easily put about 7 boxes of shells through it so far, and the only problem I've had is that I have to clean it afterward! LOL! I don't think they've made the self cleaning gun yet, but when they do, I'l be sure to get a couple. HAHA!

I've been firing 2 3/4" and 3", haven't put any 3 1/2" through it yet. Like I said, I haven't had problems with it; maybe the others you mentioned bought their out of a bad batch. Who knows?

As for buying a Benelli, well, my next purchase is gonna be a 10 gauge pump or semi. If Benelli has a nice one of those, then maybe. I like to research and also put my hands of the piece before I buy it. That's why I like Bass Pro in Toronto; they usually got a decent selection to look over.

ok calm down! as with anything there are always bad apples inthe bunch but i know for certain five or six different cases of bad p 350's. mostly jamming problems and double cycling when pulling the pump back. you gonna trust that to take on your goose or duck hunt? not me! I will stick with my bennelli SBE and my nova for back up just incase.

Calm down??? Never was angry; just joking and laughing mostly. If you thought I was angry, then I apologize for the misinterpretation. I thought I had lightened the post with the "LOL" and the "HAHA". I'll try to ensure my lighthearted jests are better understood.

As for trusting it, I understand that I got what I paid for; thought I got a decent piece from what I've seen so far... no jams, no nothing, just smooth sailing with it. If I ever start to doubt it, I switch to one of my Brownings, Remingtons, my SxS, or maybe even my one of my bolt action or over under shotguns. I got enough to choose from, thats for sure.:D

Then, I'll loan out the Stoeger to someone who wants to hunt with me, but doesn't bring their own gun. If it don't work for him, he'll know to buy and bring his own next time!:shotgun: Lord knows, I get a little tired of a few friends I have who want to borrow a shotgun, use it, and then return it dirty. Maybe giving them a "problem gun" will teach them a lesson.:slap::)

I would go Benneli before Stoeger but if you are looking for a budget 3.5", spend an extra $200 and get a Baikal MP-153 Semi Auto. They retail locally for $599. Indestructible, you need to clean them every couple hundred rounds but no big deal.
They need about 75 rounds of heavier loads to break them in but after that they work great.

I have probably put about 3000 rounds through mine this season and the only trouble it gave me was using Walmart's Winchester bulk packs in cold weather, after a few weeks of frustration, I found the Federal from Ctire to cycle flawlessly.

I was in a similar situation - I went with a Franchi I-12
It's between the two (Stoeger & Benelli) - not as nice as a Benelli, but made in Italy for a bit more $ than a Stoeger.
