Beretta 1301 Comp questions.

Hi,

My question is to any owners of the Beretta 1301 Comp.(not the pro). I bought mine just before summer and have trouble with shells staying in the magazine. I don't think the Cartridge Latch Assembly is installed correctly. I will attach a pic with the latch holding a shell in place and it barely makes contact with the rim of the shell. I'd like to see if other owners are similar or better. If I try to load more than 2 round they just launch out on to the loader (which I'm holding in the pic out of the way). Its supposed to be a 5+1 gun with no mods, yet I can't load more than 2 in the magazine. I want to compare with others before shipping to warranty.

Thanks for any help.

I had a 1301 Tactical with the same problem when using Challenger shells. Federal and Winchester worked fine. Shells wouldn't stay in the magazine under recoil. After a year long fiasco trying to get a new shell stop from Stoeger, I simply gave up and sold the gun. I fully disclosed the issue with the purchaser who was ok with it.
While I could have just stayed with a brand of ammo that worked fine I didn't feel comfortable not being able to feed it any brand, anytime.

I currently have a Comp with zero issues.
For anyone wanting to buy a replacement part, be advised that the Tactical and Comp stops aren't the same.
As far as only being able to load two shells at a time, remove the plug in the magazine tube.
The pictures below aren't mine. They were sent to me by a fellow forum member and clearly show the difference.

And a good one:

Edit: I was too slow posting and see that you did remove the plug. Maybe you aren't pushing the shells in quite far enough to go past the shell stop?
And yes, in your picture there's very little contact on the shell rim.

Bought mine 4years ago, its probably seen 1k shells, never had the issue.
The bolt release was unreasonably sensitive, which is also the shell release when pulled the other direction.
I suspect its more to do with the release being finicky, that it's not reacting well to more tension from the tube spring.

Yes the bad one on top is just like mine. Did they replace theirs? Do you have to replace the whole latch assembly?

So for loading, I am only loading one shell at a time. No double or quad load. I can load 2 shells and when I load the 3rd, it ejects as soon as I pull my thumb away, so no chance of trying the 4th. 2 stay in the gun. Hopefully that explains it.

If you're pushing the shells past the stop but they eject after only two are loaded then maybe the added spring pressure is causing them to pop past the stop. It's very clear in your photo that there's very little contact on the rim.
Yes, the guy that sent me the pictures replaced his.

The latch assembly is one part. The part of it that retains the shells in the magazine is part of it. It's simple to replace.

Ok, so now I will call StoegerCanada and see where I go from here. Should be covered by warranty. I wonder it the latch can be bent a little towards the centre of the shotgun.

Thank you so much for the info.

This is what the complete part looks like:

No, unfortunately bending it isn't possible.
You're welcome, glad to help and best of luck getting it resolved.

One other thing. While the actual part that bears against the shell rim can be removed, as far as I know it's not available separately. The complete latch assembly is what's sold.

So I was able to fix my latch issue thanks to Armybuck041 who had the same issue. Was able to put a slight bend to the latch assembly and it moved about 1mm to catch the shells better.

Now onto my next problem. Shells not ejecting very well. Like terrible. So the first time I took it to the range and learned of the latch issue, 50% of the shells didn't eject out of the gun cleanly. I had to pull them out manually to allow the next shell to chamber. The guys there suggested I shoot 3" magnums out of it, to break it in. I was shooting 2 3/4" 71/2 trap shot shells out of it. When I got home, I also googled it and some comments I read is you really need to clean and lube the 1301 guns to make them work (not all, other had said they have not cleaned their 1301's in 5000 rounds). So I tore the gun apart and detail cleaned it top to bottom, and I couldn't find much that needed it.

After that I bought 2 boxes of 3" magnums, 1 was #4 lead, the other #4 steel. Headed the range and 90% of those 3" shells (both boxes) jammed. I also put 2 more boxes of the 2 3/4" 7 1/2 shot through it. About 50% of those jammed. With the 3" shells they all looked the same when jammed, like they couldn't clear the ejection port. The expanded shell touched the port at the barrel end and the case end was all the way back. All were easy to pull out, so they didn't feel like they should have jammed. I didn't think to take pics, so I don't have any of the 3" jams.

On the 2 3/4" shells, the jam looked different each time. They were in various stages of the ejection port. I did take pics of this.

Anyone have any ideas of what may be causing the jams? The ejector looks good, moves freely and looks like it is at the correct height to work correctly. The same for the extractor.

you have a gen 1 that has a sensitive shell release latch(rocker style) it also doubles as a shell extractor. this will help if accidentally hit it or sometimes from recoil.
