Beretta 391 Trigger / Safety Problem

Last year I purchased a used 391 Sporting off the EE and have since used it for about 60 rounds of skeet. It has been very reliable but there is an issue that concerns me.

When the gun is cocked and the safety applied, it is still possible to squeeze the trigger and move it rearward. Releasing the trigger will usually cause it to spring forward to its normal position, but it will often stick in the rearward position.

When the trigger is stuck to the rear I can usually use my finger to push it forward to its normal position. Sometimes, however, it will be firmly stuck and I am unable to move it. When this happens, a movement of the safety to the off position will fire the gun.

When the gun is not cocked and the safety applied there is little to no movement of the trigger, this problem only happens when it is cocked. I have cleaned the trigger group numerous times and this does not seem to alleviate the problem.

I wanted to ask if any 391 owners had encountered a similar issue or had any suggested how I might fix this.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

*I had this posted before in the gunsmithing section but thought I'd try it here for more exposure

It sounds like the trigger group needs disassembled and cleaned. Not just hosed out with an aerosol cleaner.

It's ok for the trigger to move a bit when the safety is "on", but it should not fire.

There is a small spring that is installed into the front/bottom of the trigger, this is the trigger return spring.

After cleaning, add a tiny bit of lube to the pivot points.

I tried to replicate this with my two. The trigger returned on both no matter how hard I pulled it. Not sure what the problem is.

Thanks Lodi, I think I'll have to try that. Just to clarify, it won't fire when the safety is "on," but will fire as soon as you move the safety to "off," provided the trigger is fully stuck back. Something's definitely not right, a full disassembly it is. Perhaps the trigger return spring is somehow jammed / damaged?

Claybuster thanks for checking as well, I've never had a problem like this before and I hope I can remedy it -- it's strictly a range gun but I'd just sleep a little sounder if I could fix it. Love the 391 otherwise!

The Beretta 391's seem to be very problematic lately. Are they having quality assurance issues?

Moving the safety to "off" shouldn't fire the gun. The trigger must be moving further in order to fire. This info, plus the info in the original post, leads me to suspect that a trigger job was done, and done in an incorrect manner.

At this point, I would clean the trigger group, check the spring for alterations such as clipping coils, and look at the sear hooks on the trigger and hammer for alterations.

Thanks again for the info, I pulled the trigger group for a quick look before disassembly and it does look like there are some "polish" marks near the trigger hook...I'm guessing you're right. I'll rip it apart before this weekend's shoot and check everything else.
