Hi guys,

Experienced shotgun shooters, I need your help !!

Just got my hands on a beautiful shotgun and I have a few questions. Here's what I know....

It is a 12 gauge, has a 28'' barrel, it only fired 15 shells since it was bought a few years ago. It says it's a Silver Pigeon S but it also says it is chambered for 3.5'' shells. I know for a fact that it was never modified. My friend who I got it from would refer to it as a s686s. It has an automatic safety lock.

I wasn't able to find any information on a Silver Pigeon that would shoot 3.5'' shells. Not one !

My questions....

How old is this gun ?
What's its value ?
How rare is it ?

here's a few pics...

thank you
Mario

I owned that same model that I had bought new from Epps somewhere around 2005. Used that for Skeet for a while but found that to be a little too heavy obviously in comparison with another 686 SP with 3in chamber that I was also using for clay. I remember Epps having a couple at the time I got mine and I was able to pick one with a little nicer wood. Don't recall seeing any 3.5in gun since then but I may be wrong.

To add further, value as a used firearm will obviously be driven by overall condition and should be in sync with current price point for a used 686 - there are folks who may prefer to use a 3.5in chambered double gun for Waterfowl/Turkey.

It's not rare at all they still make em and there are lots of them availiable
Can't tell you how old it's is
And I have seen them advertised new from 2200 to 3300 depending on the dealer and if it was purchased pre or post canadian dollar tanking
But you definitely did get yourself a beautiful shooter

I have one that I bought 8 years ago new. I believe I paid about $2500 for it. It was too nice to use so I bought a Benelli SBE for hunting. It sits beside its little brother silver pigeon 410 waiting for my grandson.

Beretta may have run special batches but they don't regularly offer 3.5in chambered guns in their O/U lineup.

I have a Beretta catalogue late nineties addition that shows 3 1/2 chamber option also saw a Beretta 12 gauge 3 1/2 inch Onyx for sale at a gun show a few years ago . It was barrel heavy and clubby in the handling department and I couldn't even visualize shooting 2 1/4 oz lead Turkey loads out of that gun. I would think your 686 would or should have lighter barrels than the Onyx .

A good friend had one, used it for goose hunting for a couple of years. He found it too punishing with 3 1/2” goose loads and reverted to 3” for geese, 2 3/4” for ducks. His original thought was a general purpose do everything shotgun but as a break open gun it was awkward in a blind and too heavy to be a great upland option so he sold it, bought a camo Beretta 391 with 3 1/2” chamber and a nice light Antonio Zoli over/ under 20 ga for upland.
