I am in the market for a 20 ga upland gun. The Beretta is known to have a stiff safety when shouldered. I shouldn't have to pay a smith to fix a factory trigger on a new gun. Thoughts pros/cons. Already own a 80's Citori fixed chokes but rumours this year non-toxic shot will be mandatory for upland in AB at the pheasant release sites.

Bismuth shells are expensive but cheaper than a new shotgun. If you love your Citori don’t put it out to pasture so quick based on a rumor

I loaded Bismuth way back when SIR carried it at $120/7lbs .It's a hell of a lot more now. My current wand of death for pheasants and Huns is a 50's vintage 20ga Ithaca 37 FWT. The Citori is 80's with both 12 +20ga barrels fixed chokes.

I've never noticed an issue with 686 safeties myself
Fausti class or class slx is a very nice 20ga. Better fit n finish than a beretta 686 and to me they feel better than both the browning n the beretta

The Berettas do have the stiffer safety that can be fixed by either doing a break in with the shotgun or take it to a gun smith to be polished. The Beretta is generally lighter and slimmer. The Citori Hunter is slightly heavier (approx. 6 lb 8 oz) with a boxier forend and higher comb, often providing a smoother swing and superior recoil reduction for, respectively, a "solid" vs. "fast" feel. If you prefer a quick, light gun, choose the Beretta. If you prefer a traditional, stable-swinging gun, choose the Browning

First I heard of more regulation on shot type. My shotguns are fine for steel but I have a stock pile of expensive lead pheasant loads. Where did these rumours originate? I searched the web but found nothing.

Browning and Beretta shotguns fit differently. I have had a few Beretta models and none fit me as well as a Browning. The drop is different as mentioned but also the cast. The Browning models I have shot are neutral and the beretta models are cast left of right handed.

If you want a nice light upland gun, FAIR shotguns should be considered as well. I have a couple of 20s that have been trouble free and they are excellent upland guns.

Thought I would send a quick email of to Beretta on the cast question. They were a couple of weeks getting back to me. I have handled and shot dozens of SPs and was beginning to think I was loosing my mind. They are indeed made with cast for right and left handed shooters.

Dear Mike,

Most SP will come with around 4-5 degrees of cast for right handed shooters. If it's a LH gun it will relatively have 4-5 degrees of LH cast. I hope this helps.

Sporting guns will have palm swells so handiness is very important on those models.
