The link below shows a series of pictures of a "mint" Beretta 687S. There is no doubt because it is engraved on the receiver. It was manufactured in Italy in 1990 (AK).

I suspect however that it has been factory fitted with a 682 barrel set and would really like to confirm that.

It has no mid sight bead (only a front sight) and this could indicate a direct Italian import. The 75 cm (29 ½") barrel, chambered at 2 ¾ (not 3") is matted, mid vented, has a top plate 10mm wide ( I think 687S were 8mm) and has added side plates with decorated screws that I am not able to find on any 687S images. It looks like they were added to fit the receiver. The wood is of higher grade and there is a golden woodcock on the top lever. It is balanced perfectly to less than one gram.

My hypothesis is that this was a special order to fit the competition grade barrel of 682 onto an engraved receiver of a 687S (unless I am mistaken, very few copies of 682 were engraved with hunting scenes)

Pictures under the link below are illustrative. Any help in clearing this matter would be appreciated.

I have the same gun a 687S, however the wood on yours is much nicer. Mine is a dark wood with very little grain & the medium gloss plastic finish. I bought it as a used gun in 1998 from Williams Arms in Port Perry. It will break them all "IF" the shooter does his part.

Big B's

I have had a few 687's of various configurations, all the earlier ones (pre sivler pigeons, 1982 is the year of my old one) that I have had, have had the scew and shoulder that you see there, they were made to be replacable if the shoulder were to ware out and cause locking issues just like the hinge cones.
The extended chokes, mid barrel vent and 10mm top rib suggest a higher end skeet/DTL/ABT gun.
You will be hard pressed to find an early 687 with 682 barrels as the 682 was not made before 1992 as far as I have been able to find and hose had wider frames.
It could have been an early design which then lead to the 682?
All of my family back home in England have always used Beretta's of various ages and grades, it's not uncommon to see one or two year runs of odd styles from Beretta.
Great looking gun though!!!!
PS: the one in the above picture had teflon coated barrels to aid cooling during sustained firing!

I have never seen a 687 that did not have a schnabel fore end in Canada. That alone makes it unique.

What does balanced perfectly to within one gram mean ?

The weight of the barrel and the forend equals the weight of the stock and receiver. There was a 2 gram difference that disapeared when I put flush chokes instead of extended. I may be wrong but it seems to indicate a certain level of care at the factory. Such precision cannot be attributed to luck. In comparison, my Browning Citori shows 340 gr difference. A huge difference in feel when handled.

Thank you for the information, very useful
