Beretta 92 Hammer Question

The hammer on my Beretta 92 seems to have some sort of a half #### position. I was wondering why? Any ideas?

I would imagine that it serves the same purpose as "half-####" positions on other pistols. It is there to 'catch' a cocked hammer should it fall from any other reason besides pulling the trigger or decocking. Think of it as a safety harness.
