I shoot a Brig96 and this issue is nothing new to me.
I'm surprised nobody mentioned a worn slide stop spring.

Especially Slavex.
A worn recoil spring will cause this as well. It may have enough power to cycle another round, but not enough to lock the slide open.
I replace the recoil spring and firing pin spring and the slide stop spring and I'm good to go again. I
replace all the springs around the 5K mark as a maintenance procedure, but the recoil and slide stop springs need attention way before then.
Ruling out your thumb, additional possible causes may be weak magazine springs and
puff handloads. Excessively hot loads will manifest similar issues. Also mag springs installed backwards and simply a drop of CLP in the right places.
NB. With semi autos, always replace the firing pin spring when you replace the recoil spring to keep proper timing. Especially if you see skidmarks on your primers. I use Wolff variable power recoil springs in all my guns.
