I was in your boat a few months back. I looked and handled alot of shotguns. I was kinda set on a beretta from the start but as for the model I was not set. I too am a wood stock kinda guy.
I can't find anything bad to say about the a400 unico. I wanted one with a 3.5" as I already shot that. The two models I was comparing were the 391 xtrema2 and the a400. I found that the 391 had too many parts and was not as easy to clean. I also thought that the trigger guard was flimsily and the safety on all the different models were awful.
As for the kick off system it is the same between the 391 and the 400. Neither do anything to make the guns look better but at the same time they are not that bad. I do shoot 3.5 on a regular basis and I find that even shooting the 3.5 it feels like a 20 not a 12 and my loads are 1.5 oz. My only issue is that beretta compaires it to a vehicle where they say try driving you car with rubber suspension. So I'm not sure how long this will last but they claim the life of the gun.
Fit and finish are good on the 400 and I have had 0 Ftf or fte it likes every thing that I give it as it is self regulating. Other useful features are that in order to take the charging handle out you have to push the bolt head in sightly. This is better than the standard one you just pull out. It keeps one from loosing it.
The other feature I like with the beretta is that they have the recoil spring on the mag tube instead of in the stock. This makes it more user friendly for changing it if needed altho it should be good for 10000 rounds.
So personal I really like the 400 and I can't think of much wrong to say about it. The one thing that does stick out is that it only comes with 3 chokes and not 5 like the 391. Two of the chokes are good for steel c and m but the f is not so I didn't think much about that but I generally use a m choke anyways.
I would buy it again if I had to do it over. Just make sure you shop around they can be found under $2000
