not sure if there is more recoil than a gas system, but it is smooth for a recoil system.it is the same action as the SBE.i've got an auto 5 which i love to shoot,the pintail is alot smoother and quiter than it.i mainly use it for ducks and geese so i am using heavy loads and don't really notice the recoil.
don't use challenger shells,i was having a problem with them extracting.i was talking to some Beretta reps and they said that they have a problem with challengers as they use less brass in their bases and are harder to pull out of the chamber.
i believe it is discontinued but you can find them used for good prices.
