Looking at a Beretta M1 .308. No barrel markings visible. No sign of a sleeved cylinder. How do I tell if it is a T2 variant with 1/2’ shortened foreend / barrel / stock or normal M1? Is there a normal vs T2 measurement such as front of received to handguard retaining spring measurement or something as I’m considering a new barrel and would like to know in advance. Thanks.

There are two possibilities - an arsenal original barrel will have proof marks and production details visible through the channel on the right side of the stock. You might have an aftermarket .308 barrel and the markings might be in another place covered by the stock or handguard.

The other thing is you might have an Italian military conversion to 7.62x51. I don't know where the change is marked. I believe one of the tell-tales is the original factory barrel was cut back to shorten the distance to the shoulder and refaced for the extractor and feed ramps. The overall lengths will be 1/2" shorter.

The T2 variants were the ones that were brought in assembled poorly a few years back by a certain ex business member, and one blew up; were they not?

Typo 2 rifles are marked Typo 2 on the receiver above the serial number. They were refurbished by the Italian Military and so stamped. The Barrel length will tell you if it is a full length 7.62 barrel conversion. I have had both a Garand with a full length 7.62 barrel and now a Typo 2.
My Typo 2 still has the original Springfield barrel with the stamping visible on the barrel under the op rod.

There are lots of the real deal T2 around, not sure who brought them in, but they have the correct markings on the receiver heel and everywhere else, Tenda and several shops have them in stock.
Marstar is back as a sponsor I believe, under new ownership, staff bought it out, seems like a different place all together now, John is out of the picture. That T2 debacle was something else, thread is probably still around if someone wants to search it up.
All that to say, anyone looking at a 308 M1 should do some research and get lots of pics, ask here if unsure. It's either a real T2, rebarreled 30'06 built by someone, or rarely and unfortunately one of those John specials that were just trash lol

When did John get "out if the picture "? When marstar was sold he was still part of it. If he left it was some time after it sold not when it sold.
