I have been doing some research and looking for 20ga 28" shotgun for skeet and sporting clays. There seems to be some conflicting information about two different guns. I see on the different forums even the guys are mixing up the two different guns. This is what I get from reading. The 687 Silver Pigeon is no longer in production. The new Silver Pigeon Grade 1 comes in a field version or sporter has replaced the 687 Silver Pigeon. My question is when you look for guns for example at Ellwood Eps or the like they still have them listed as the 687 Silver Pigeon. So if you order a gun online how do you know if you are getting a 687 Silver Pigeon (old version no longer in production) or a Silver Pigeon Grade 1? I also get the impression that Beretta is slowly phasing out the 68X series guns and replacing them with new models. For example the 686E Sporting in 20ga has been discontinued. I owned a gun in the past that was discontinued and getting parts after were an issue. Ellwood has a nice 686E Sporting 20ga on for 2271.00 but will getting parts in a few years time be an issue. I heard that they only manafacture the parts for several years after they have been discontinued. Thoughts are appreciated. Cheers.

Peerless.

I would not be worried about parts for the Beretta 68X series. Coles in Maine still carries parts for Beretta's other discontinued lines of shotguns and they will ship most parts to Canada. 68X's are a proven design with a massive number already in the market place. If there is a shortage sometime in the future I am sure there will be after market manufactures that will supply the market. There are some now that are making replacement springs.
I own several Beretta shotgun products ,gas and o/u, and plan on shooting them for many years to come.

Silver p

Hi. Here is what I can tell you. I have 3 beretta over unders. I have had three additional ones in the past.

I have 2 silver pigeon 686 e, and a 687 sporting. I have also had 2 687 ultralights, and a 682x trap. I have a 12 a 28, and a 410.

They are all the same. There are some differences in rib type(wider and or stepped in competition guns. The 687 have better wood and usually better or more detailed engraving. The ultralights have an alloy receiver. The competition guns have a heavier receiver that is a bit beefed up but only in total width of the outside of the receiver. Inside measurements are the same. Bbls are interchangeable between guns of the same Guage.

Parts are interchangeable as well, with some gauge specific exceptions.

They are all but indestructible and a joy to use. I got rid of the trap gun because I don't shoot it enough. I got rid of the ultralights because they are too light for me to swing right. To get a different design with beretta, you need to go to the so series which are hand made, or to the dt series. Even the gubileo is the same design, only with the addition of hand engraved side plates. Hope this helps.
