Just received a new unfired BMR-X and got to cleaning the barrel before firing it. I couldn't believe the amount of dark, dark brown-coloured fouling that came out on the patch. I figured another 10-20 more patches and some Patch Out would take care of it. About 25 patches later there was still a lot of crud on the patch. Twice I've left it overnight with Patch Out in the bore, tried some Sweets 762, brake cleaner, Wipe Out, and more Patch out. Even used a bit of JB Bore Paste, and still dark brown crap on the patches.
Doesn't really look like rust. I don't think they use cosmoline ... Wtf? I've never seen this in a new .22 .
Emailed Bergara to see if they use some kind of rust preventative at the factory, no response yet.
Anyone else have experience with Bergara .22 LRs and similar condition?

Brown coloured substance in the bore is not uncommon in some .22LR rifle bores. It's found on many CZ rifles. Apparently it's a product of the bluing process. Clean the bore well and it's gone.

Just like the exterior bluing on some guns, from brand new, you wipe them with an oily cloth and you continuously get brown residue on the cloth no matter how many times you wipe it. I have a few guns like that.

I believe it's the oil they put in after they test fire it before the final bluing goes on to protect the bore during the process.

Shoot it clean...let us know how it is fr accuracy

Flitz paste or Flitz bore cleaner. Amazingly removes any surface rust without harming barrel bluing. Then leaves a highly water resistant finish behind. I’ve trusted it for decades.

Swab it then take to the range and run a box of shells through it, then back home and a good cleaning again, my CZ 457 was similar as was my CZ455 never had a bergara but assume it's nothing special or different

so now what ever was in the barrel has been well baked in
..nice.....

I took a new Uberti to a g'smith to help with initial cleaning as what I had at home couldn't get it clean
but I had to have it clean before i'd fire a single shot through it
YMMV

Ever bore scope your barrel? What did a gunsmith do that you could not do yourself?

Having worked in the shops of gunsmiths and gun makers, I'm not unfamiliar with cleaning bores. My inquiry was if anyone had run into this with their Bergara rimfire. Every rifle I've purchased new has had fouling in the bore, some worse than others. This one was pretty stubborn. As for the crud getting 'baked in', the pressures etc. generated by a .22LR would not likely peen whatever residue may be left into the bore surfaces following a diligent cleaning.
