Best $1000 Bolt Action Rifle?

I want a bolt action rifle in 30-06 for Ontario deer, moose and bear this fall. I want a walnut stock and a 22" barrel in matte black or blued steel. I only have $1000 to spend MAX on the rifle alone but if we can aggree on a $700-$800 rifle too I am all for it! I would like it to be in the 7 to 7.5 pound range without a scope as the 30-06 doesn't deserve a real lightweight in my opinion. So what is the best rifle in those guidelines out there that can get me started? Thanks
 
Winchester Model 70 Sporter, walnut/blued, 7 pounds 4 ounces, 24" barrel. If it HAS to be 22", just step back two inches, or buy the Featherweight which will shave off 4 ounces and 2 inches.

I agree, and even if the rifle you buy is not "mint", if it will hit where it is looking, it will do the trick. A "new" rifle is not necessarily more accurate than a "used" rifle. Ask anyone who owns a swedish mauser. I would say that spending $500 on a very nice used rifle, and $500 on ammo to play with it until you are very confident in your ability, and know your limitiations with it, is a better use of your money.

Just my 2 cents worth..
 
Have a good look at the savage rifles first. They are not pretty but have a great rep for accuracy!

Ellwood Epps has a bunch listed from $400 to $800.00. Worth a look for you!

I'm not so sure anymore with Savage. The QA has gone supremely downhill since '07.

Check out my other thread in regards to my 10-FLCP. It's supposed to be the cream of the crop in Savage's lineup, but I can assure you it isn't, at least not currently. My problem isn't unusual, and the most basic of QA would have caught the defect before it left the factory.

I now regret purchasing it. (This is my third Savage, and likely, the last one.)

No such thing as the best. Everyone has likes and dislikes. What may be best to me, you might not like. Or the one-size-fits-all stocks that come on factory rifles won't fit you properly, but may fit your brother perfectly.

Go out and size up a bunch of rifles, and buy the one that feels the best, even if it has a 24" barrel or a synthetic stock. If you compromise on fit, to get wood and 22", you will regret it. I learned the hard way...

$1000 tax and shipping in? Might have to go used...

Btw, doses that $1000.00 inculde the scope?
 
you always get way more value out of a good used gun. ie: rifle original price 1600.00 used price 900.00 unless your looking in the ee then its more like original price 1600.00 used price 2000.00 LOL!
