Hi GunNutz,

What is everyone's opinion on the best 10mm platform for running mid to high range pressure 10mm. I have been reloading for years, and I am looking to explore this cartridge to its full potential.

Please chime in!!

Mike

I really like both my Glock 20 (which I still have) and Glock 29 (which I still kind of regret selling), but admittedly haven't tried 10mm in any other platform. I was using +p ammo regularly in both when I could still get it. They both ran great, and the polymer frames seemed to soak up recoil nicely.

If you want to explore limits, probably the S&W 610 N frame revolver.

If you want an auto, the discontinued S&W 1006 also has a reputation for being very robust.

From there, you get into the 1911/2011. Most that have fully supported chambers (e.g. Dan Wesson, STI) and that are properly sprung should be able to handle a diet of pretty strong loads. Early Colt Delta Elites had issues and many show signs of abuse (and no, not just talking about the frame cracking above the slide stop cut out). This may have been because they were not properly sprung.

The Sig P220 10mm is reportedly quite robust but not common these days - another run is on the way.

I've read mixed reviews about the EAA/Tanfoglio 10mms. Apparently the newer models are better built.

Then there are the Glocks like the model 20 and 40. I'm sure they can handle just about anything but the chambers are unsupported so may not work for reloading.

Thanks so much for the info gents. I really like the versatility in the Glock platforms, but I am weary about the unsupported chambers that Glock purportedly has. I have posted another thread in regards to aftermarket 6" Glock barrel for the Glock 20. It pains me that I would have to invest more money to ensure safety firing reloads in this platform, but it is what it is. I understand that Glock utilizes chamber tolerances that are not as tight as other pistols in order to provide reliability.

The STI Pistol Silverback kindly recommended is gorgeous, but out of the price range for this project.

Have any of you guy's run a 10mm Glock with an aftermarket barrel?? Let me know.

Thanks,

Mike

i was wanting to get into the 10mm club myself and have been kicking the tires for the last year or 2 looking what to pick up.
it came down to a Colt Delta Elite or a Glock 40.

as ive got a lot of 1911's already and as the price of the Delta Elite's are pretty high i ended up going with the G40.
i havnt received it yet, should have it in my hot hand in another week or so.

im looking forward to it.
i was leery about getting the 10mm in a glock as my thinking was the all metal 1911 would handle the power better but after a lot of reading and talking to a couple guys who shoot 10mm a lot im pretty confident that the G40 will serve me well.
with the long slide and barrel i think its a solid choice.

another option you have or may have is the Grand Power 10mm.
there was talk it may be coming but when and at what price point is anyones guess.

PS - if the Glocks can handle the 460Rowland conversions im pretty sure they can handle the 10mm

Revolver or a glock. You said upper level 10mm. A delta looks nice but can't handle a true 10mm diet. Also, real 10mm ammo is far less pleasant in a 1911 platform than it is in the g20. I've shot the delta, and I own a g20 and reload (hot) 10mm.

I have a wolf extended 10mm barrel w/muzzle break on my g20. I also have a 9mm barrel for it. With 9mm, it feels slightly more powerful than a .22 lol

Mine is a gen4, and I have no "unsupported barrel " issues.

I own a Glock 20 but recently shot a Grand Power P40 in 10mm. Amazing gun. Night and Day difference in recoil compared to my Glock. The P40 just sucks up the recoil. Very accurate as well.

Congrats. The 40 looks like a nice package and has been tempting me too. Post a report when you get her.

Thanks for the reply. I just finished a 460 Rowland build and was able to work up the load data into 44 magnum territory. It is a fantastic cartridge! I am definitely leaning towards the Glock platform, but I am still worried about not having an aftermarket barrel for it.

I have a G21SF with an aftermarket IGB conversion barrel to shoot 10mm. It is thicker then a G20 barrel because it has to fill the hole for the .45 acp in the slide of the G21. I love it. Allows me to shoot the two calibers as well. I don't know much about hot loads, but I do reload my own 10mm. I will shoot 180gr projectiles with 6.0gr of Titegroup with Win lp primers very confidently. More powder than that felt like it would be a little to hard on the pistol for no good reason.

I have owned nearly every 10mm out there except the Bren 10. I'd recommend the Glock 40 or 20 personally. You can load right to max without changing anything. I stopped using aftermarket barrels and springs years ago after doing my own testing with all sorts of combos and max loads using Blue dot, AA9, 800x longshot and power pistol. Perhaps the pre generation 3 guns had looser chambers but the only time I have ever seen bulging or cracking is with loads way, way over maximum. The Glocks are tanks. Don't let anyone tell you different.
