what is the best 1911 single stack .22LR conversion kit around? and where to get it?

I've seen a few out there for sale and I'm looking for a good high end model. I just bought a GSG-1911 but I would still like a good top end to add to my other 1911 gun. I'm giving the GSG to my boy.

Note: someone started a post looking for a TacSol one and I didn't want to high-jack his post.

I agree on the Marvel Precision unit 1, unfortunately they have not paid up the extortion for a state department permit, and won't even send springs to Canada. Take a vacation down south - they don't count as registered items.

We sell the GSG 1911 slide and mag as a conversion kit right now it works only with the series 80 but they are making another kit that will work with the series 70 1911.

Best regards,
Scott

Every Ceiner 22 conversion I've ever seen or used has been impeccable. The Kimbers are also very well made. Original Colt Ace's still come up from time to time but can start to get pricey ( 700-850 ++). Which ever one you go with try to score the spare mags with the purchase, they can be tricky to impossible to find for some of them, or shockingly expensive.

Freedom Ventures lists the Marvel kit as sold under the STI brand name. Gunnar at Armco lists a couple of them on his website.

Where can I find back up information for the last statement? if I go that way, I want to be sure that I'm 100% legal, both in USA and Canada.

Requires an export permit (kind of obvious, but nothing is really obvious in relation to gun laws), found on Ciener web site:

"Last but certainly not the least item of importance is that these conversions, magazines and spare parts are considered by our U.S. Department of State to be Category 1(A) Munitions List items. Their export and subsequent diversion is controlled and must be licensed by them."

Mine came from an "old target shooter" in Ontario who bought it at the Camp Perry US Nationals and brought it back (paying taxes, etc.) several years ago. When I bought it from him, it was non-registered and sent by mail without any intervention from the firearms registration system. When I tried to buy extra springs Marvel Precision initially said "no problem" then backed off and said they did not have an export permit.

Actually this is incorrect. The Freedom Ventures - STI branded units are the product of Advantage Arms in California - Bob Marvel, the gunsmith who designed the system, first set up operation in the midwest making the match grade "unit 1" and "unit 2", sold the operation, worked for Advantage Arms in California, designed the next iteration, quit and then started "retuning" the AA product to make match grade units. Marvel Precision makes the "Unit 1" and "Unit 2" and has nothing to do with the AA/STI/Marvel retuned units.
