I'm a young shooter looking to get into target shooting with a .223 bolt-action as I would like to be able to wander away from the 100m range from time to time and practice precision (well fairly precise lol) shooting. The Stevens 200 has been recommended by a friend of mine as a great rifle for my price range. My price range is $400 or less with taxes and shipping in (shipping varies however). New or used (if it can be found used at the price) I don't much care as I will be getting a lot more use out of it myself I would hope.

Thanks!

From comments on the forum, and from personal experience trying one at haggisfest, you got it right the first time.

If you get the Stevens, and drop in a better trigger, it's an awesome gun for the price!

My experince is any New .223 under $400 is a rare breed indeed. I +2 the Stevens, if you can get one in your price range.

I've seen them on SIR for about $400 after taxes and that non-sense. Would you consider the Remington 700 (SPS maybe?) I've never shot one or heard much about them but they seem to be popular. I don't know if they're worth the extra money ($519 on SIR) can anyone vouch for them in .223?

Yep, just get a Stevens 200 and go! :D

Both of mine shoot into half an inch.......... or less.

Got one for my son and it will shoot Wally World 223 in 1/2",You won't go wrong for the price.

So everyone would agree that the Stevens 200 is the best rifle for the price and that spending a few hundred more for the Remington 700 SPS isn't worth it?

Well, evidently those who have responded are more than pleased with the accuracy of the Stevens. This has been well established on other threads as well. :D

Why would you not want to save $200 and put that towards better optics for the rifle?

I think thats what I'll be doing. I haven't had any experience with either so I couldn't really say whether one would be worth $200 more then the other. Any recommendations for a reasonably priced scope, shooting at 300m I would think.

er,.... I don't think anyone said the extra few hundred wasn't worth it.... just that the Stevens is great bang for the buck..... ;)

Guess I'm not the only guy lookin to buy a Stevens. I think I'm still going to get the Stevens as its within my price range but the Rem 700 looks really cool haha. Even if its $200 more I'd say I'd pay $100 of that just for the improved looks cause I'm retarded like that haha.
