Best .308 out of the box tactical/precision shooting rifle, scope and cartridge?

Too many variables. Have never owned or shot a pgw coyote but it would likely be between that a Chou bros custom. Scope, s&b or nf. Cartridge, if I was doing only fair weather shooting, I'd likely try lapua 308 Palma brass. As far as bullets and powder go, whatever the gun likes! Chou's can spec a reamer for whatever you like.

I am a lucky guy. Have a custom from the Chou Brothers and just got a TRG in the mail. I can tell you that there are pros and cons to each.

I'm interested! Do you care to post the pros and cons? If not please PM me. I have a gun built by Chou precision, and have another in the works. I've put 40 rounds through the one I have now and the worst group I've shot is 1moa. The rest are trying to measure the smallest ragged 5 shot hole, and then the least amount of vertical. And those groups have been shot off of a bipod I haven't figured out yet, not a rest.

most people cant shoot as well as their rifles anyway.. so 'best' and 'best for you' are different to me.

"best for an unproven shooter"
Tikka Tactical or CTR
Schmidt PMII / Premier tac Optic
Hornady Super AMAX 168gr ( given me better results that GMM )

"best"
DTA SRS A1
Schmidt PMII
lapua loaded ammo

My opinion.

Rifles: Not in any particular order

PGW Coyote
AI AW
TRG 22

Glass ( In order of personal preference and broken down by price )

S+B Pmii
NF NXS
Sightron Siii

Calibre

.260 Rem
.308

+1, if your name/rifle is not on this list you are like the rest of us, a precision wannabe. The "All groups must be under .500" @ 100 yards/meters" is a B!tch. Best is 3 of 5 with average below 1/2 but NOT good enough to join the precision elites.

This thread is worthless without pics of five 5 shot groups on the same page per the 1/2 moa challenge.

Sorry but don't see your name on the 1/2 MOA so at best is world class WANNABE.

OP> Why 308 and not 6.5/260?

Notice that most of the 1/2 MOA are NOT 308s but smaller better BC calibers.

Lol, what a small group of Canadians try to do on a forum is hardly indicative of precision rifle manufacturers products on a worldwide stage, never mind years or even decades of military service.

Most rifles made today can print 1/2" groups with hand loads, our challenge has more to do with the shooter than the rifle itself.
And before I get flamed yes I tried it and got 23/25 rounds - twice.
Besides, anyone could bs the thing and get on the list, not witnessed so it means nothing, it's just for fun.

A good tac rifle must in addition to accuracy also be reliable, handle some abuse and have good ergonomics.

Oh and JP, nobody is buying THAT group, it's olympic level shooting, it's just a bit much to believe.

if your intention is to be flashy at the range then the sky is the limit,

but if you care mostly about results, the savage 10 series are consistent SUB MOA rifles and sub .5 with reloads (in my case), they are relatively light and cost a fraction of the price.

Hello fellows,

Without starting the Third World War  what do you consider to be the best .308 tactical/precision shooting rifle, scope and cartridge?

Thank you,

Still asking the same questions eh? Didn't learn your lesson under your old alias "Sir Isaac Brock"?

Snipershide tuned you up good, remember?

Till the next time...... f:P:

Hi fellows, thanks for the posts, fun and interesting to read :)

Looks like he forgot that he was just logged under his previous alias...f:P:

Fun thread.....

If it's just to disturb the septic tank...job well done.

If it's truly soliciting advice you need to put $$ as a sandbox. Suggesting a Coyote wearin' SB glass ain't much help to a blue collar fella raising 3 kids! lol....and why fook around with a robot produced tin can when you're single making 3K yr??

There are obviously several options out there off the rack that will bang off sub moa groups all day long with good factory ammo ....life is easy for the rifleman these days!! lol
The only reason to build or spend more than a K is to be unique, pride in a one off, compete for the accuracy improvements past moa.....if YOU and your WALLET are up for it.

Start with an off the rack rifle with decent glass...shoot from improvised positions in variable conditions at various ranges within 300m. If/When the rifle becomes the limiting factor in shooting moa then get your wallet out for a better rifle/glass.
Otherwise spend the $$/time shooting more till the RIG is holding things back....not U.

And another 2c worth....spend the $$ on the ammo, trigger, glass....in that order....especially if you are starting out.

Tough crowd.

Yup, it could get ugly because once the BR guys show up we are going to find out that a 300m 10 round grouping of .800" from a tactical rifle -all in a 1" bullseye- is about as likely as a mermaid riding a unicorn across a rainbow.
