Hey guys, can anyone suggest a good .308 round for moose? We usually take them from pretty far 200-300 yards probably on average.

i use barnes 168 gr and federal nosler partitions 180 gr pretty much anythin will work that is 150 gr and over. i shot a huge cow last year with some 150 gr powerpoints and they fully penetrated right throuh and found the cow 50 yards away.

Yes .308 Win.

I have been told different things from several different people.

Some say the 180gr.'s are too slow for longer distances (my rifle only has an 18" barrel...) others say the 160's are too small?

I will be hunting moose with an 18" barrel this coming session too. I do not hand load so I have narrowed my choice of factory ammo to 180g Federal Partition and 168 g Barrnes ttsx. I have been practicing with both and partition consistently groups better at 100 M (out of my gun). So that is what I am going with. Shoot a box of each and see which one your gun likes better.

Choose what ever loading (within reasonalbe bullet weight) that shoots best in your rifle.

All the guchi this that or the other for a bullet means squat if it doesn't go where it should every single time.

Suprisingly you'll likely find the simpler the bullet design the better they often shoot.(as far as I'll go in a recommendation)

Since breaking much over 2800fps is'nt in the cards with a 308Win...super uber tough bullets are pretty much just marketing hype.

your in ontario through we dont know where the OP is from

here in the brush your lucky to get out a 100 yard shot most happen under 100

180gr. fusion

i thought fusion were a light bullet for deer, recently reading Secret of the Sambar magazine an has an article where 3 different Sambar stags 500-600lbs were shot, an lost with Fusion ammo...

on another note, i didnt think the old 308 would take such an animal..... V:I:

if you reload mad to go past tsx pills, otherwise Woodleigh from australia... Big game pills!!!!

Any 180 grainer will do in a .308. I have had great success with silvertips on elk so they will be fine on moose.

Factory silvertips?? ive also had bad experience with well hit Stags, a fleshwound , the blood dried up an the deer ran off an possibly died few days later..

stay away from anythin designed for deer!

I've seen elk, moose, deer, and bears all harvested by 150gr. factory Dominion/Imperial SP's. the gentleman in question did all that with an anceint old 742 Woodmaster, in 308Win. and a Lyman peep sight, he simply said the 180's didn't shoot worth a darn in his rifle, so he used 150's because they did shoot. He also picked his shots, and had patience beyond compare.

Hitting what you aim is paramount and your first and biggest hurdle. Guchi uber super tough bullets are about as far down my need to have list in cartridges like a 308Win, because your impact velocities are rarely much over 2700fps.

Once you get over the 2700fps impact threshold conventional cup/core bullets may do some strange things with regard to terminal ballistics. Once you cross the 2900fps impact threshold it's almost a given that cup/cores will have a large failure rate.

SilverTips, PP's, SP's, Core Locts, in bullet weights of 165gr. or heavier will with out question do the job, if they shoot well in your rifle, and you are equal to the test.

Pay attention to the words I've highlighted in bold..they are what matter here.

I don't have any problem with .308's efficiency at 200-300 M.

However. I doubt that Op's rig is an adequate combination (accuracy wise) for 200-300 meter hunting. You see, he has discussed his gun + scope in another thread and posted pictures. Like me, he is shooting an 18" barrel scout gun with a 4x scope. Personally, I do not feel comfortable to take such a shot at 300, specially where shot placement really counts, due to the size of the game, caliber or lower velocity to begin with (short barrel).

But that is only me. I am sure many hunters can take that shot comfortably.
