Best .308 round for moose?

I don't have any problem with .308's efficiency at 200-300 M.

However. I doubt that Op's rig is an adequate combination (accuracy wise) for 200-300 meter hunting. You see, he has discussed his gun + scope in another thread and posted pictures. Like me, he is shooting an 18" barrel scout gun with a 4x scope. Personally, I do not feel comfortable to take such a shot at 300, specially where shot placement really counts, due to the size of the game, caliber or lower velocity to begin with (short barrel).

But that is only me. I am sure many hunters can take that shot comfortably.

My optic is 7x magnification not 4x... I am not worried in the slightest about being able to make a vital shot at 300yards with my rifle.

All I am worried about is velocity loss from the shorter barrel and I have never hunted with .308.

I'm gonna buy a few different brands and test them out see what kind of velocities I get with the different bullets.

You, Sir, [OP] Just find out which 165 or 180 grain bullet works best in your rifle.
Practice with that round till you are absolutely positive you can place that bullet
properly every time, and go Moose hunting. [Enjoy the steaks and roasts, BTW.]

Just don't try any low-percentage shots, or tough angles.

Ignore all the naysayers on the forum. You will do just fine.

Umpteen thousands of moose have been slain with the lowly 30-30.
Your short-barrelled 308 will still have more oomph at 300 than the 30-30 has at 100.
Another analogy is the 300 Savage. In a 24" barrel, it is kicking up about the same velocity as your short-barrelled 308. Many moose shot with the 300 Savage at 300 and over.

Proper shot placement is the key, not high velocity.
I cannot imagine what sort of mentality suggests you must have a 300WM or 338WM to shoot moose.

I had a 20" barrelled 30-06 for a number of years. Shot several moose with it, a couple out at 300+ yards. Moose just as dead as if the shot had been 50 yards.

After a bit of testing at the range the 180's I was shooting were going way too slow for my taste and I think I'm going to go with a 160-170gr bullet.

Does anybody online sell and ship high end hunting ammunition?

This. In spades.

Hit it in the ass with an Uber-Cannon, and go home empty handed. Smack it in the ribcage, with anything suitable for bigger than rabbits game, and you eat moose.

Practice lots, take the high percentage shots. All is good!

Cheers
