best 6.5x55 out of the box precision/target rifle?

I fired a 6.5x55 that shot great to 900yds. At 1000yds results were not so good. Pretty poor actually. I never was able to confirm if it was the load running out of steam or just my lousy shooting. Its a given that lousy shooting was certainly part of it. But I dont think every round was getting there as 'smartly' as it needed to.

I have been shooting the 6.5x55 Swede for several decades now. It is a chambering that I really like a lot.
My Remington 700 "Classic" in 6.5x55 is on it's 3rd barrel, so you can guess it has been shot plenty.

With this rifle, I have shot eveything from coyotes to Elk, and have not had to shoot any animal twice.
My favorite bullets have been the 125 and 140 Partitions, but I like the way the 130 Scirocco works as well.
Also have some 130 Accubonds to try. Slower powders have always worked best for me in the Swede.

That being said, my powder of choice with the 120/125 weight bullets has been a surplus powder acquired
from Higginson's in some quantity years ago It was designated as AMS-47-SB Lot 10. It is a slightly slower
W760, and is a true spherical, so it is easy to accurately throw from a powder measure.

If I was looking for an accurate, out of the box 6.5x55 today, I would have to buy the Tikka, as much as
I dislike these rifles. :) D.

If it was loaded soft it might be tired at 1000.
The 6.5x55 has more case capacity then the 260Rem or 6.5CM, and bullets can be seated long due to the long actions. In a good gun, no reason it can't be loaded to the heels of the 6.5-284.

I salvaged an M96 barrelled receiver from TradeEx last year; made in 1922. Scrounged the various parts and got a new stock for it. This rifle has quickly become one of my favourites. I haven't tried it out past 300m yet (my range only goes up to 300m)m but it seems to be capable of sub-MOA (easy) if I'm doing my part and I'm using 140gr or 130gr projectiles. I'm still working on loads, but as long as the bullet is >=130gr, this rifle is pretty accurate.

All that said, I wouldn't hesitate to get a Tikka - everybody I know that has a T3 in 6.5 Swede loves it and the seem to be great shooters. If I were in the market for a new 6.5 Swede Tikka would be the first thing I look at (along with Sako).

If you are serious about wanting to shoot long range, then get the right kit. 6.5x55 is ok. I used one for several years in competition until the barrel was shot out. Then I re-barrelled with a 260Rem Ackley. Similar case capacity.

You need a match quality barrel, and single shot target action (more bedding room on the bottom, and stiffer than a repeater) a top quality trigger and a proper stock.

I was shooting one today (260Ackley) with a 30" McClennan barrel on a single shot Savage action (the old CIL 950T).

If you can find a CIL 950T or a Musgrave target rifle, all you need to invest in is a new barrel.

Unfortunately -- while I would like to blame it on the load :) ... I am more than a little certain it was the 'nut behind the trigger' that was really at fault. Certainly the 6.5x55 is a forgiving (and accurate) round for a neophyte ... does the 260 Ackley offer any advantages over it?

Being able to build one on a short action would be the only real advantage I can see.
They both throw pills at the same velocity for the reloader.

AP - If that was the Bisley rifle, it was launching 142s at 2,950fps. Plenty of velocity. Carol's 6.5-284 was only 100 fps faster.

As for the 260Ackley, make sure the reamer gives it a deep throat so it can shoot 140s without using up any powder capacity. 49gr of 4831 is to the base of the neck. (Not a suggest load - my rifles like 48gr).

yes it was - and that confirms it ... it was rotten shooting - combined with piss poor ability to read the wind ... and probably the guy next to me that kept jostling my elbow :) ... but the 6.5x55 rifle delivered a 50.8V at 900 (although on a target so big - we wont see that again!)

The point is of course that the 6.5x55 is a pretty fine cartridge - as demonstrated by the fact that an absolute dolt like me can produce a reasonable target with it. And of course Carol did fantastic -- as usual!!

How many rounds did you use to shoot the barrel out??

Another vote for 6.5 from Tradex.

Here is mine scoped CG-63, This is an extremely accurate jig. I can switch between scopes and diopters quite effortlessly - twist off - slide on.
