Hello,

I just acquired a Russian SKS with a laminate stock. I requesting from the vast knowledge of CGN'ERS of what aftermarket magazine I should go with? Tapco? I just want to take out our magazine and use an aftermarket without having to cut or fit the mag to much.

Thanks for you thoughts.

Every sks is different respectively. You will have to put in some work in the mag or stock so that the mag is snug in the mag well. But if I had to choose, I would go with the Tapco made magazines.

My tapco's have not caused any issues once they were fitted properly...light sanding inside the stock...some other brands, can't get reliable feeding from.

5/20 tapco. Mine works excellent, no issues whatsoever.

Avoid the Baur 5/30, you get what you pay for, and at 25 bucks you're paying for weak feed lips and rounds flying all over due to them being weak, I have two and both of them are useless and don't work.

I use my mags in the original wood stock

The current/recent/latest/NEW Baur Arms 5/30 SKS mags work real well now.
As was mentioned though, so many variants/origin of manufacture of SKSs that a guy pretty much HAS to expect to do some fitting when you try to add ANYTHING to an SKS.
In the end though, nothing really works as well as the original SKS magazine.
Especially up here where we can only shoot 5 rounds at a time. It's almost faster to just use (5rd?) stripper clips.
Hey it looks awesome with a banana hanging out the bottom of your SKS. Might as well go all the tactical way and get a black polymer (TAPCO, ATI...) stock and dress that thing RIGHT up.
My experience tells me that aftermarket mags fit better in an SKS with a "tacticool" stock.
Mags slide right into my Tapco-ed SKS but not into my Son's '50 with the original stock.
We aren't gonna alter the original stock so...fixed SKS mag it is for that one.

Usually (always for me so far) installing a tactical looking stock required no mods to the rifle at all so it's completely reversible (so no need for flaming please). In FACT, if you are a purist and want your SKS to stay minty original it's probably a GOOD idea to...as soon as you GET it..put it into a tactical styled stock and take that nice pristine (refurbed laminate) stock under the bed so that one day you can prop your grandkids onto your lap and say...this is the SKS grampa bought way back in the 2000 teens. This is how it looked when I pulled it out of the box for the first time.

Anyway...I love the big detachable box mags too and so I have a Tapco 5/20 and some Baur Arms 5/30s. All work well. Or as well as a detachable mag will work in an SKS.

make my tapco fit. will give you beer

My experience has been that it was a waste of time trying to use after market magazines (I have only used Tapco, and no mods were needed). It just isn't worth it...same capacity (limited by law) and it is annoying that the magazine cannot be removed without locking the bolt open...

I won't be filing or altering the stock so that leaves the mag itself .Have 1/2 dozen Bauers so hope they work as a lot of people were complaining about them spilling rounds and FTF

spend your money on more ammo, I have 3 tapco mags, and a couple different sks's, the original mags work best hands down, my opinion anyway
