I recently picked up one of these fine rifles and took it out shooting today. The only .308 I had at home was the cheeper Igum .308 150 gn SP. At the range I had to sight the rifle in at 6 inches high at 100 yards to hit dead on at 250. According to Remington shoot, most bullets from a 308 will have to be3.5 inches high at 100 to go dead on at 250. I found this ammo performed poor and dropped alot faster then what other rounds advertise, has anyone tried Igum before, and what rounds have worked well in your savage 10fp's?

Savage 10 FP ammo

Well, i have been shooting savages rifle for years. I would say that norma match. If you check out my thread in this precision rifle section, you can see what the savage is able to do. I would recommend the morma match ammo or do some reloading. I have a load that is the same as the norma match but does not fall off at 500 like the norma match.

Also I fould that the winchester 168 ballistic tip ammo is excellent in all my 308 savages.
Just my thoughts

Handload

had a case of portugese surplus. It would group 1.5 inches at 100 yards.
155 grain sierra palma match with 47 grain varget loaded in a norma case. It grouped 7 rounds into 1 inch at 300 yards. That is the difference ammo makes. I don't think you can go to a store and buy ammo that can be as consistent as that which you make yourself from the very best components.

By the way I sold the case of portugese surplus after my first grouping with handloads.

So is there any reason NOT to shoot the Portugese Surplus through a commercial rifle like the Savage? I have heard of some people having a bit of trouble closing the bolt on it.... slightly diff dimensions??

The moral of the story is that while you can get decent performance with cheap ammo, and good performance with factory, if you want optimum performance, handload.

My 20" 10fp likes heavy bullets because of the fast 1:10 twist. If you want very acceptable performance with factory ammo at a decent price go for Winchester 180gr silvertips. If you want outstanding performance then handload.
