I'm new to red dot sights and holo sights. I was thinking of picking up one or the other for pistol shooting with a Ruger mark III. I think the more open tubeless style are better for faster target acquisition but how do they compare to the more scope like type of red dots? For someone who can't afford a eotech or aimpoint, whats the best deal? Are the 50 dollar tasco red dot sights total garbage or are they fine for plinking (i.e. will they keep their zero)?

I may be better off saving the money for a nornico 1911 if this gets above 200 bucks. :p

The old saying "you get what you pay for". Don't waste you time and money on the cheap stuff, you'll only be looking for something worth while later.
For your needs, look into a Burris FastFire. Ideal for handgun, open-style, very durable, $250ish. I don't think you'll find anything as dependable for less.

I found my cheapie perfectly fine for keeping zero on hot 22 mag loads. However, I took it off as I preferred a scope.

If this is a serious gun, consider an Eotech. If this is a "zombie flesh eating protector", get the cheap Ebay knock-off. ;)
