Looking for a good set of binocs that wont break my little student sized bank. I don't want to spend my money on junk. What is the best value for my money for a decent set of binoculars for general hunting?

thanks
Simon

Whatever you decide you want, a visit to Camera Land Inc (a sponsor of this site, see their link amongst the ones at the top of the page) is worth the time. If they stock it, there's a good chance their price is lower than most.

I bought Minox 6.5x32 IF from them recently and am impressed with how good they can be for a little over $200 including shipping and $exchange (it's gotten a bit worse since then) and taxes at the border.

Never owned a pair but the Vortex sure impressed me when I tried them out last year. Great value for the dollar I'd say.

I bought a set of Vortex Viper 8x42's from Cameralandny. They are AWESOME. Best money I ever spent. They were demo ones, but you'd never know it - they were brand spanking new in the box!

Came to about $425 shipped to my door.

I've compared them to all of my friends bushnells and B&L, and mine are substantially better. Not as good as Leica, but at less than 1/2 the price, they're good enough!

Do a search on the web - ALL favorable reviews.

Nikon Monarch from Cameralandny. 200 bucks shipped, good decent glass for most hunting situation. Waterproof to a T. Case in point, drenched it in muddy water after a quad incident last weekend, wash it in the sink, good as new!

Having looked through a LOT of bino's (used to sell them, actually), I would highly recommend Vortex Diamondback's or Nikon Monarch's (in that order). The Vortex Diamondback's are just a whisker better optics than the Monarch, and they have a better warranty, and are less expensive ($199 was what I gave for mine).

Either way, you wouldn't be dissapointed; in the sub-$500 class, there's nothing else even close (heck, both the Monarch and the Diamondback rival or beat a whole bunch of other stuff that costs up in the $1,000 class).

(and if you can afford something closer to $500 than $200 - the higher end Vortex stuff is even better).

If on a tight budget and you don't mind a larger porro bino, Nikon Action Extreme EX 8X??

You must get the Extreme brand. The reg. Action line sucks.

You should be able to find these on ebay, etc for around $100. Optics are superb.

If you want a smaller footprint, lighter roof bino, Nikon Monarch. For the money, the only other one I found was the Pentax but it was heavier so went with the Nikon.

The pentax had truer richer colours.

The Nikon Monarch's are outstanding glass for the money. I got mine for $300 incl. tax, and I honestly can't discern any difference between them and my buddy's $1000 Steiners or $1200 Bushnell Elites. At low light levels the pricier glass may hold up a little longer, but the Nikon's are a steal.

Choices

Celestron have some good products and a great warranty chinese made but so are almost all others in this price point. Check out the Outland LX, come 8x42,10x42, and 8x32. All retail around $200.00 or slightly less. The Warranty is No fault. FS
