I'd like to pick up a cheap bolt action .22lr, at first I had my mind set on a 452 but i'd prefer something that I can toss around in the bush without worrying about scratches...

My budget is around $300, i've read great things about the savages and winchester wildcats, what others should I be considering?

Which rifle in that price range has the best accuracy and trigger pull ?

many thanks :)

for that price range, the savage bolt will be hard to beat. The newer ones come with the accutrigger which has to be the best rimfire trigger in that price range. They come in several different variations including stainless, blued, synthetic, laminate, hardwood, heavy barrel, sporter barrel etc.

If you can afford a bit more cash, the CZ 452 is a fine rimfire. I have both a Savage and a CZ in left hand and love them both for different reasons. The CZ might not be the best 'truck' gun though...

Do you notice a big difference in accuracy between the two?

The savage with an accutrigger has proven many times over that it is the greatest out of the box accuracy. Actual accuracy is indeed the responsibility of the shooter. Many high end guns are outshot in matches but a steady shooter that knows his "cheaper" gun.

savage will be more ammo specific. CZ is best bang for the buck, need to spend a LOT more to get similar accuracy. Your best truck gun would be a CZ scout, small, accurate with a broad range of ammo, can pick one up new for $429,

Yeah that scout caught my eye today, $409 at frontier but isn't it made for kids? " 12” length of pull for young shooters"

Can anyone else confirm that the cz will shoot more brands of ammunition accurately over the savage?

Each gun...even guns that are the same make and model will shoot one brand better than the other. To say that one make of gun will shoot many brands better than another manufacture would be stretching.. My Savage handles many brands and shoots one particular make much better, so I stopped looking as I am very satisfied at the performance. Even the most expensive target ammo can shoot like a whiz in one gun and be absolute garbage in another.

For some strange reason the three CZ Americans that I have all love Federal American Eagle 38gr HP ammo. Heard this tid bit of info from a fellow on rimfire central.
I had a Browning model 52, so I went out and bought a bunch of very expensive Lapua rimfire ammo for it thinking that this high end piece should shoot it great. Guess what a lot of wasted money thing just wouldn't group worth a darn. Lucky for me my CZ Full stock shoots the Lapua very nicely.FS

I had a Sav. mark II with a HB on a laminate stock, pre accutrigger. A fine shooting rifle. Try and find yourself a Win model 69A, everyone that I have is a great shooter. The CZ's are nice and I have many of them as well, but well above your $300 limit.

Those Win Wildcats seem like a great buy for less than $300.00, come with a recessed crown and 3 extra mags. FS

CZ Silhouette can make a great truck guns, that's what mine does, Synthetic stock on it is pretty tough, and it's very accurate.
May be over your planned budget tho.

I wouldn't recommend a Heavy Barrel gun for beatin around in the woods with. To much weight to carry, any way to decrease the weight of a 22 for carrying around the better. Most 22's that I own are lots accurate enough at 75 yards or so. Marlin has some nice tube feed 22's that load 22 S,L,LR flawlessly and have a newer trigger, nice blueing for around 200$. Semi's in 22 lr come in some real light weight versions as well

Can I talk you back into the 452. I have a few and like them a lot, especially after owning several sub $300 22s. FYI you can buy them used for under $500 and I recently found one for $400. As others have stated the CZ is great right out of the box while others may need some tinkering and a few extra dollars. My CZs are my never-sell guns.

stir the pot

Keep your eyes peeled for an older Bruno, a model 1, 2 or 5 would fit the bill nicely, sometimes can be had for the amount you are looking at spending. I saw a nice 2E in a shop in Edmonton for $400, it was very nice, but my rimfire budget is shot for now or I would have brought it home. Hey lonewolf, yes, Go Canucks Go (GOLFING) haha

No. i wouldn't agree with that at all. The CZ rifles I have experimented on did not seem any more or any less ammo sensitive than the savage rimfires.

Neither is typically over-sensitive but some brands might shoot a tighter group in an individual gun. You can only try and see. But a broad generalization that one is more ammo sensitive than the other is not what I experienced in 4 different CZ and numerous savage rimfires.
