Best bang for your buck black rifle?

Used Type 97 gen 1.

You can find them pretty good prices.

Gen1 has to many mag issues... as it was designed for a defrent rou d.. lots of filing of feed ramps and buckets of unusable magazines... gen 2 or 3 are pretty much sorted out, very reliable rifles...

Est bang for the buck... ruger pc carbine.. takes glock mags, ammos cheap gun can still be found under $1000 , optics ready, good irons, take down.

Full size calibeir... type 97 gen 2/3 if you want to blast lots of rounds
Gen 2+ ar180 if you want to blast a moderate ammount (or just by lots of spare springs lol)

If you want a hunting rig/compition gun... a tavor 7 is the go to for .308 . Nothing but good things from my buddy that owns one and i thought it was a good shooter too when i put it through the paces.

Have put hundreds of rounds through my gen 1 Type 97 with no problems at all. Was this something you personally experienced with your gen 1 or just something you heard?

The T97 Gen1 likes some mags better than others, but once I found the ones it likes, I've put several thousand rounds through my Gen 1 without malfunction. If you're really worried, it literally tells you what year they were made in the serial number prefix. I have a 2015 and the issues were sorted out by then. There's rail adaptors you can plug into the carry handle and you can cram MAGPUL MOE rail sections into the handguard vents if you want a light. You can make it work.
