I was looking into buying under armour 2.0 for hunting this season. I do not want somthing to warm as I do a lot of walking. The reviews are kind of mixed does anyone have any experiance with the under armour 2.0 and do you have any suggestion of a good base layer that won't break the bank.

I have used under armour for work (military), hunting and physical fitness. I find it doesn't do what I think it should. I've switched to merino wool layers because of that. When 30% and free shipping sales come about I go Kuiu. I find even during bug season there 125 base layer breathed very well even on +25C days. I wear a base layer to keep from going crazy with bugs. Otherwise I use Haley Hanson because I have it, and used it alot before I found Kuiu.

Merino wool is very good for hunting. Aside from being excellent at wicking sweat, keeping you warm when its damp and drying quickly its also very scent free and can take many days afield before it smells bad enough to need washing. Synthetics start to stink within a day. I like UA stuff and other athletic apparel but if I am in the woods for a few days, merino is my next to skin choice.

What retailers sell merino wool. Never seen it and how much does it cost.

Stanfields, Mark's Work Warehouse

I used to buy UA and did so since the 90s. After they pulled a hunting sponsorship I wrote their board and informed them I'd never buy their product again and would use my influence to deter our Agency and the other local Depts. from purchasing their products.

Merino wool is your friend. multi day backcountry hiking medium pack weight.

socks, (smartwool)
base layer, (cabellas, icebreaker(best new Zealand merino wool), Outdoor research, Black Diamond, Mountain equipment Co-op)
underwear (icebreaker only other brands scratchy itchy),
hat (thin helmet liner style good for high output days still warm and light for packability (Smartwool, outdoor research, most brands),
glove liners, (smartwool, icebreaker Good dexterity for shooting)

I've bought merino items where ever I see them, Costco, mec, cabelas, Superstore. Most outdoor retailers will carry some amount of it, just gotta keep your eyes peeled for a sale. I snapped a new set of mec merino long johns up that were on sale for 45$ down from $99 reg, found a nice brooks bros merino sweater at value village for $12 in new condition. Costco regularly has merino Calvin Klein v neck sweaters for $25-30, it doesn't have to be an outdoor or hunting line. I wear merino when I ride my motorcycle in the fall/winter, snowboard or just casual wear. It's the best under a shell in the wet damp winter we get out on the west coast.

Oh you gotta check out a brand of merino socks my wife's uncle told me about called Darn Tough, they have a lifetime warranty. If you wear a hole in them or damage them they replace them. Expensive but well worth it, I love them. They make a thick and thin version, they are the tits.

I've been looking around for some wool base layers last few weeks and Le Barons has some Misty Mountain brand for a reasonable price. h!!p://www.lebaron.ca/pdf_files_fall12/misty_underwear.pdf

I'm a big fan of Icebreaker merino. When I'm hunting I'm wearing it almost all the time. The best way to get the Icebreaker stuff is to wait until the big stores have "all camo 30-50% off" sales...and snatch the camo Icebreaker long underwear. No one needs camo underwear, but that's a lot of money!

I've tried all brands from MEC to Mark's to UA and Bass Pro brand.

For active hunts I've found merino wool, I use Icebreaker, to be most effective, quick drying and comfortable over synthetic.

For treestand and ground blind sits I use the old version of BP's XPS 4.0 top and bottom thermals.

All synthetics take a back seat to Merino wool. I use cotton or sometimes silk for warm weather undergarments, but NOTHING beats merino wool for over all comfort, wearability and low odour. My wife became a true believer too when we backpacked together over 1400km in Europe during two trips in winter 2014 and spring 2016.
