Best battle zero for Ar-15??

Hey fellow gunnies,

I have a theoretical question in the interest of remaining politically correct... What would be an ideal battle zero for a "zombie apocalypse" of SHTF scenario in Canada. Would you go for 50m considering most of us live in suburbs or residential communities or would you for 100m to account for Canada's vast open spaces? Let me know!
 
Well I get it that most people zero in AR's at 100m to account for the balistics and flat trajectory, however others have recommended zeroing a dead on 50m zero to deal with most realistic situations. Think about it, in what scenario will you be defending yourself from home invaders that are 100-200 meters away...
 
Lookup 36 yard zero for AR15. Good for when you want to zero at 25 yards. Also good for a preliminary zero with a red dot or BUIS.

At the end of the day I like all my rifles zeroed at 200 yards. You also get a 50 ish yards zero that way too. With red dots and irons, you'll need to bring your A game to get a good 200 yards zero.

I was taught this method in a carbine course a few years back.
 
100 yard zero will provide point of aim "zombie kill shot" from 25-200 yards. Most people can't aim well enough to get a "zombie kill shot" much past 100 yards, especially under duress and firing off-hand.

Watch 10 videos from 10 different YouTube ninjas, and you'll get 10 different answers on "best zero". Just look at the ballistic charts and decide what works best for you, and ignore all the ninja advice.

It was optimal to me for one reason most people overlook. The effective range of the AR15 and the cartridge it fires is MAX 300m.
After that for a battle zero with irons it's questionable and dodgy. Again not if you have a tuned precision marksman type rig with a floated barrel and 50 power scope on it....

The RIBZ is what I had on my all my rack grade AR15's. It's outstanding. Basically from point blank to 225m with a 20" barrel AR15 and A2 sights you can hit POA with no hold over. Past 300 you just dial the elevation drum to the corresponding number and you'll still get center of mass hits out to 500 as long as you actually know how to shoot.

The max rise of a 62gr projo with this zero out to 225m at max height is around 2" high at the 120m mark.
So unless you're target is bigger than 2" you can essentially just point and shoot out to the effective range of the cartridge/rifle from 0m out to 225m. The RIBZ with the A2 sights gives you dial and shoot adjustability as well. It's probably one of the best rifle/sights/cartridge combos ever put on a rifle aside from the M14/7.62mm 147gr FMJ combo maybe (close tie).

I don't use scopes/sights/or any of that overpriced complicated s**t though so I'll defer to people with more experience for "best battle zero" for optics.

Here is a good vid to explain why you use 25 meters to sight in with a 300 yard zero and how to do it with a carry handle (fixed or attachable) and a traditional post front sight. Watch for the difference in set up between the two. It does not show you how zero or set your BDC after your sighted in, but there is an Allen head index screw on the top side of the handle to loosen and set up your indication correctly. When using your rifle with a removable carry handle you will have to realize whether you have a 6/300 or a 8/300 yard handle in relation to the length of barrel on your rifle. All sorts of variables can mess with your BDC and I'm not going into them right now, but needless to say, ammo is another consideration.
I figure sight in distances really has to do more with the hardware your running on your upper more than anything else. For example, the old A1 fixed handles had no BDC and all elevation was done with the front post sight. I'd use a 36 yard sight in on this upper and forget about it. If I was using a red dot or reflex sight on a flat top with a standard front A2 post sight; I'd set my optic to co-witness the front sight. Your zero could vary. as I would think you would run a flip up rear sight without a BDC. Running with a scope? There a are a million configurations I could drone on about... Anyhow, here's the vid:

Zeroing at 50m will generally get you COM at 200m with 5.56 in most barrel lengths unless it is using a ridiculously short barrel. You will be within a MOA at 200m. There is no reason to over complicate things unless you have a MOA ammo/rifle combo with at least 6X in optic and you are planning to engage targets less than 3 MOA beyond 200m.
 
Im going to add my 2 cents to the pot. A zero sighted in under 100 yards should be checked at range to ensure there is no windage errors, as well as to double check your trajectory.
