Best Bear/Moose/large animal ammo

im well aware of the potential for danger, however i believe it represents such a miniscule chance that carrying a gun for moose defense is laughable. the only people who would consider it are wanna be outdoorsman.

Indeed - I have a ATC for work, and it clearly specifies "defense against predatory wildlife". I've only had to draw a few times, but one of those was for a moose! At the time, I didn't give a cr@p what the permit said!

Happily, I've not yet had to fire in all these years...not even a warning shot. I've managed to talk or otherwise extricate myself from the situation, and have learned along the way not to be stupid or cocky.

bottom line: carrying a shotgun with slugs (or buckshot) is a good idea in wild country

I here that crazy Alberta moose carry flamethrowers for people defence. Now bears around there carry lazer pistols and they always plant landmines that look like poo. They also use high advanced stealth fur. In that case, you better carry at least a Blunderbuss Bazooka. A Bazooka that fires multiple heat seaking missles loaded with Anthrax.

Is it illegal to carry in provincial parks? For defense, not hunting of course.

Yes.

Yes.

Who would hide a landmine in poo?

GijinsBS,

I'd LOVE to hear someone try and explain to a CO about how they were forced to shoot a moose for "protection" lol.

I think you might watch this one closely right around the 47 second mark.

Try and explain this one to the CO's considering Big Game Hunting with a dog without a leash is illegal.
There is another vid of these guys and the dog where they get charged by a Bull Moose who is none to Happy.
The hunter gets a shot off and hits it at the base of the antler and skull, Moose drops and amazingly gets back up again, man explain that one to your hunting buddies.(to bad I can not find it)

Just using these clips from you tube as reference only.
Yes, I know they are from Sweden where this type of hunting is legal.

GijinsBS,

Thats because the poo is the landmine. I stepped in one of these dam landmines and it destroyed my moral rate for the rest of the day. These landmines can be very effective. I think the Army should research this weapon that bears use.

You don't have to show a video for me to believe you on this one. Well hunting with my grandpa once, he shot a bull moose in the skull with his .303 and the moose went down but got right back up and charged us. My grandpa shot it in the neck and it went down for good. If he wouldn't have put it down on that second shot, I know for a fact that moose would have pulled out his Flamethrower and cooked us.

What the hell kind of crazy moose do you guys have out west. When I lived in Newfoundland I must have scene hundreds of moose from varying distance and never did one get anywhere close to me. The only time I saw a moose charge a human was when drunk moron decided to put a show on for his friends and called it in way too close.

I'm not calling anyone a liar but I'm surprised to hear anyone here has been charged, let alone a good few of us.

We were hiking in the Cariboo Mtns years ago and came across a bull moose coming the other way and he wasn't in a good mood. He came at us in really heavy bush - just layed his antlers back and it was full steam ahead. Luckily he lost interest and we beat a hasty retreat.

You can hunt moose in Ontario with dogs. And thats hardly a counter to my argument. Purposely harassing, provoking, and chasing a moose is different then randomly stumbling across one.

Ive been within very close range of probably dozens of moose. Ive NEVER once felt scared to the point where I felt I needed a gun. That doesnt mean I wont get trampled next time im in the bush (I rather hope I dont) but its not something that I feel a need to pack a gun for. The Big Bears, by all means, go for it.

I don't know if I buy the whole 000 and 00 buck for bear defense. What kind of penetraion can you expect from shot? I suppose you could sting it and scare it, but I just think hard slugs like RWS Brenneke or Challengers would be more to my liking personally. I understand the theory behind using shot, but I just think slug followed by slug followed by slug would work.

The caveat here is that I believe you should draw your bearspray first. It is extremely effective and has been proven by Utah, Alaska, Alberta, and BC studies by government, university and bear expert studies using real data.
