Just wondering what you guys think the best bolt action Rifle is and what the best bolt action rifle for under $1200 is. I would be doing target shooting not shooting animals but I would like to go out in the bush anyways.

Wow - tough one that has been commented upon so much. "Best" is such a subjective term but my feeling is that AI, Sako TRG and PGW are always going to be contenders in that category. Best under $1200 would be a Rem R5 ( mmm, may have gone up to a bit over the $1200 now but not by too much )
 
savage model 10 fcp sr in 308. 1000 yards for 1000 bucks. I don't own one but will concede that it seems to be the best bang for the dollar.
 
Don't buy anything fancy - rifle of chambering, chances are you might not like it so its better have something that is easy to sell.

Tikka 223 rem is a very good bet.
 
If it is just for target shooting, likely one of the better options is a Swiss K31. Likely run you 300-450$ but you can still buy the match grade non corrosive (though berdan primed) ammo for 400$ for 480rds. There is also tons of accessories you can add. Scope mounts, target sights, muzzle brakes, etc. They are also extremely accurate rifles and have a fantastic trigger (right now the iron sight long range world record is held by one of these rifles).
 
I would recommend the Remington 700 or even a Weatherby Vanguard.

All depends what caliber you want to shoot as some guns are only available in a couple calibers.
 
Thanks for the responses. I cant reply to everyone but i read them all so i will just comment. I am really up in the air right now with guns and caliber. I am not sure if I want to shoot.223 or in a bigger caliber like .308. I havent shot before. I dont even know if i can handle a 308 after shooting it for a few rounds.I was originally going to get the Ruger Precision Rifle (I love the tactical look) with a scope and bipod in 308 but i am not sure if the ranges even offer benches that can properly support me and the gun. ITs too heavy to hold and I cant go in prone position or kneel and after buying a nice scope and that rifle itll run be about $2500 at least. Just want to sit and shoot. I also think if i shoot in .223 that an ar-15 would be fun as well as I have my restricted license as well.

Also, Would a Savage Axis 2 XP with scope be THAT much different than a Weathrby Vanguard series 2 or a Tikka 3 or a Remington 700 sps. I mean if I would rather save money if I can since they all pretty much have the same look. The Ruger Precision is a different story.

Also, What is a good bipod for a Bolt Action that can also be used for an ar-15 if i decide to get one later on? Nothing cheaply made.

Love my Tikka t3 varmint stainless 223. I had a vanguard 2 in 223 before but sold it soon after buying the Tikka. The only thing I have done to it is changed out the recoil pad to a limb saver. I much prefer having a magazine and wider fore end .The heavy barrel helps accuracy after a few rounds when the vanguard heated up.

The 700 is the best two locking lug action out there... nothing seals up a failed case as well as the original 700 internal extractor system.

The ruger is pretty good. If you put it beside an off the shelf rem 700, you'll save money on the RPR. If you put a match barrel on the rem and true it, it'll cost more but should, depending on bbl and smith, outshoot the ruger by 0.02577 inches. LOL. It all depends what you want a gun for. .223 blasting rounds off is fun. AR's are fun, but you can only go to the range. No gopher shooting, etc. Semi 22's are fun as well. Much cheaper to blast rounds off. Or buy a bolt .22 and see if precision shooting is for you. Savage .22's or CZ are great. Put a decent optic on, buy good ammo, like mini mags, velocitors, or lapua/eley etc and put 10 rounds into dime sized groups at 50. Costs way less and lets you see what you like.
