Best books to learn basic gunsmithing?

Call Brownells, get their catalogue. Apart from the book section, you can learn a lot just from the catalogue. They list the sort of books, videos you are looking for. Get a Gun Parts Corp. (Numrich Arms) catalgue. Great reference. So is a Western Gun Parts catalogue.

videos

Check out american gunsmithing institutes web site , I've heard their videos are actually pretty got and they cover alot of different firearms.
The have demos of what the videos show on the web site.

Gunsmith Kinks series from Brownells. Some good basic stuff in there as well as tricks of trade once you get further into "smithing". Also the above mentioned videos from AGI. For handgun specific, if they are available, order some back issues from American Handgunner magazine. Mid 80's issues if I recall.

The best best to my knowledge, and I have a couple of them, is The Modern Gunsmith by James Virgil Howe, in two volumes. very complete, with machining overview etc. for beginners (maybe too heavy thought) to advanced / pros.
Try it and you'll like it.
