Hi, I need to refinish couple of wooden stocks, one is Krylon (?) painted the other is Varnish or Polyurethane clear coated and very glossy. I would like to hear what is the best working paint stripper and where it is available.

Just about any good stripper will work to remove the finishes you mentioned. However, if it's a hard epoxy finish, get a spray can of Permatex Gasket Remover from Can Tire, and it'll do the job. Be careful and use it only on the wood.

Poly can be a biatch but almost everything removes Krylon. Even rubbing alcohol and mild degreasers usually work pretty good. For the poly I'd try circa 1850, its done well for me on tough finishes. I've also used aerosol paint stripper made by Dominion Sure Seal from crappy tire. It works just as good as circa 1850 except it takes a lot longer to dry and its quick and easy to apply. The circa can dry up pretty quick if you're working on a larger area.

I have always used "polystripper", the jelled type with good results. I have learned something here though as I am going to remember and try the "Permatex Gasket Remover" on the tougher stuff next time, as those epoxy type finishes usually spell scrape and burn time.

Years ago I used aircraft paint stripper, from Canadian Tire. Best stuff I've ever used. They don't seem to sell it there anymore, at least the ones I've checked. The stuff they sell now that I've tried doesn't even compare

I'm in the paint business and have used many types over the years.

I like Smart Strip from Home Depot Dulux also has it

It is not the fastest nor the best but it is clean!! It won't burn your skin, eyes or nose.
