lots of options out there, but I've always seen good word about Lapua and Starline, but perhaps there's something else to consider or go for?

looking to build a load for the .45-70 out of a 15" barrel on a T/C Encore.

lastly, are there any sites/forums that discuss loading for the Contender/Encore/Pro Hunter lines? I know the rule of thumb is that the powder that gets the most velocity out of a long barrel will also get it out of a short barrel, but perhaps there are nuances to consider as well. :)

The D4198 has been working for me in the .223 and 45/70 and the price is right.

Also I think I have been happiest with Remington R P brass. The F C brass seems to be looser on the primer pockets over time. I have some Win brass too, but I can't remember what I think of it. Unless I'm pushing near the top, I don't bother sorting it and Shoot/reload a couple hundred at a time.

I promise I'll never put my 45-70 in the EE saying "lightly used", I shoot it like a .22.

I checked and compared short barrel to long barrel data.

For either, 4198 is your friend.

any recommendations on brass?

and since you talked powder, what about primers? I'm fond of CCI as a brand, but I've never done any reloading before, so am open to anything/everything.

also, boolit recommendations for deer, black bear and moose within 200 yards?

I would buy a couple hundred Starline and be done with it. Hornady, R-P and Winchester all leave a lot to be concerned about.

When I carry my 45-70 for work I use Starline brass, for plinking anything else is fine.
pounder

I concur with Starline brass. Very consistent. As stated buy a hundred or so and keep loading them until the show they are done.

Yep, I've been running starline in mine as well without any issues. I don't believe Lapua makes .45-70 brass, don't see it listed on their website either.

yeah, I just mentioned Lapua as I often see it mentioned as the brass of choice for a lot of reloading...didn't check for actual product, which as you mentioned, doesn't exist. LoL!

4198 is a good powder for anything 45-70. Rimmed straight walled brass doesn't tend to wear out as fast as bottle neck cases so there prolly is no bad choice. Avoid 1f hornady leverrevolution brass, it is shorter. Starline is always good brass.
