Cheers!!!

If your not spending a lot go for simple ie. extractors not ejectors and double triggers. A Baikal sxs is tough but crude. If you are shopping used make sure the action is tight and the stock is sound, if someone you know is familiar with double guns take them along. Tradex has a good reputation but read their adds carefully and research the specific gun yourself.

My son-in-law bought this CZ double last year, 20 ga...

http://cz-usa.com/products/view/bobwhite-202-b-case-hardened/

Was around $800 at Wholesale Sports. He asked to have a look at it at the counter, and just couldn't leave the store without buying it.

Have to say, one helluva impressive little shotgun! The action was even case hardened, beautiful coloration! Really tight, and terrific handling! And, as is usual for CZ, the fit and finish was immaculate.

For upland birds, for that kind of money it probably doesn't get any better.

Budget side by sides

I have bought two side by side 12 guage doubles from Trade-ex, along with quite a few other rifles, including a Kimber .22.

Right now, there are a lot of quality double shoutguns on their website, including some BRNO and Sauer made guns. As mentioned, read their descriptions, click on the description for a larger view, and if you see one that you might like, give them a call on their toll free number. Anthony will also e-mail you more views upon request.

You can also check out the Gun Shows. If you look long enough, sooner or later one will appear, at a reasonable price. Ask around the local gun clubs, or Gun Shop. Some Gun Shops may let you put a small "Wanted" ad on their bulletin board. It is good relations, and such a service may not make them an immediate sale, but you tend to buy other stuff from someone who helps you.

The two I bought from Trade-ex were a Hungarian FEG Victoria Grade with ejectors, and a BRNO with ejectors and a broken stock. The broken stock reduced the price to a low amount, but I accepted and was prepared to repair the stock, or make a new one. It was to be a field gun not a collectors piece, and was to be used for bird hunting. I epoxied the stock back together, and inlet two steel rods epoxied into the wrist to reinforce it.

A small piece of wood will cover these, and the checkering redone. For the sum of $150 and a few hours work, I have one of the sweetest bird guns a person could ask for.

The following represents my personal opinions. Keep in mind that all the responses to your question are personal opinions based on the experience or lack thereof of the individual offering their thoughts. In point form:

  • stay away from Brazilian and/or Chinese-made guns (Boito, IGA, Norinco, etc.) IMO, these are made from inferior materials and are poorly designed and built.
  • Make sure any used guns under consideration are proofed for nitro (smokeless powder) loads and are fitted with 2 3/4" chambers (longer chambers are available, but unnecessary on a SXS)
  • Vintage SXS's can be had for anywhere between $50 and $150,000. There are thousands of good used SXS's available at any given time.
  • New SXS's tend to be more expensive than equivalent shotguns of other designs, but there are some good values to be found. The CZ Bobwhite that was already mentioned would make an awesome first SXS, if the price is manageable with your current budget. (Sharptail and I reviewed the CZ Bobwhite for CGN when they were introduced. The review can be found at http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum...obwhite+review )

Where in Northern Alberta do you live? I have a good selection of SXS's and would be happy to sit down with you and discuss the finer points of buying and using them. I'm in Edmonton, should you live nearby or be passing through at some point.

I am from edmonton area.
