Best Bug Dope?

Believe it or not. I use listerine the mouth wash. Put it in a spray bottle. Works the best. We use it on our horses too. Been using it for years

OFF works on Mosquitoes and Blackflies. Nothing works on Deer flies! Damn bastards..

Yes, something does work on deer flies.

Somebody mentioned diesel fuel sprayed over clothing. There might be something to this since I have noticed every flying and crawling creature avoids rages that have touched kerosene. At least we know toxic properties of kerosene and diesel, unlike DEET. Not sure which one is worst thought, deer flies or smell of kerosene on your cloths.. on a positive note, you WILL quit smoking in the woods! :D

If this listerine thing gets more traction, I may give it a try. Anybody else done this?

Until then, it is face net and long sleeve shirts.

Muskol spray and Watkins anything with as much DEET as you can get in it. It is the DEET that is keeping them away. Never tried the diesel fuel but I am going to. The sticky patches work well for deer flies. Colour is also a huge factor. Dark cloths do attract more flys. We have two dogs, one a light coloured lab the other a black rottyweiler. That poor rotty will be covered in deer flies and the lab will not have one on her.

SandRoad, the problem with traps is that you maybe attracting more deer flies, instead of repelling them.

As to DEET sprays, I spray my cloth gloves with deep wood OFF and deer flies still manage to get me over freshly sprayed gloves!

Even if the traps do attract deer flies, at least it puts them out of commission....

It's all about the deet for keeping bugs away. More is better, period.

I think you can't get more than about 48% deet in Canada any more. :(

Everything used to be 98%, but, despite rigorous gov't testing that showed that deet was NOT harmful to people, the granola eaters somehow got he rules changed. Bunch of ######s.

There was at least one brand out there (can't remember the name) that was actually 100% deet. I'm sure it's long gone now.

You can still get 98% deet in the U.S.

I buy all my insect repellent in Alaska personally. I'm not into buying heavily diluted Canadian garbage insect repellent.

Never tried the diesel fuel but I am going to..

mosquitoes will still land and bite right on the diesel... Tea tree oil on the other hand does work.. As I said, boiled down burdock root juice mixed with a little tee tree oil works, and works well... Can't remember when I used a deet based product last (20yrs plus) and I worked in the forestry industry my whole life...

Anything with DEET in it. Brand doesnt matter. Its the DEET that counts.

And another thing, no spray will keep the mosquitos and blackflies from swarming. All it does is stops them from biting.

And here it is. DEET is king. The higher the concentration, the longer it will last. At one time we could buy Muskol with 98% deet, and a little dab would do 'ya. Now, the nanny statists have banned any such item from sale...I'm not sure if it was premier McDad or a predecessor, but anyway, now in Ontario you can't buy such potent stuff.

And yes, the DEET will not stop them from gathering around you. It merely masks your CO2 and water vapour signature and tricks them into not being able to locate you, once they are up close: they do not rely on sight to find you. Black flies rely on sight, mosquitoes follow the chemical plume you emit as a result of breathing.

Deer flies and other tabanids rely on sight to find you. Chemical repellents like DEET offer limited protection against them.

The problem with this stuff is that the "better" it is, the more prone the dope is to taking the finish of your gun, or eating away at anything it touches. If I am using a my CZ 455 for gopher hunting, I am very careful how I apply DEET as it will eat the finish on a gun. But then again, I guess that is one of the costs of hunting.

#### if it can eat the finish off your gun just imagine what it's doing to our skin!
