If you're just looking to kill them then use whatever you can already shoot accurately at a distance. My dad uses his .308. I've used my winchester 1895 in 303. I have a friend who uses a 270. I know of lots taken with a .22lr.
So ya...population control is done with whatever you have on hand when you see one.
Hey there Johnny. The .223 is a great coyote round will kill them dead out to 300+ yrds if you do your part. Ammo is readily avaliable (any walmart) and fairly cheap, low recoil and noise.
The .243 is what I deem as a dual caliber rifle easily pounds coyotes to dust out to
600+ yrds and as more than capable of killing deer sized game out to 300+ yrds. ammo is easy to get anywhere and not much more expensive. It will have more recoil and noise than the .223.
Either of these calibers should serve your coyote hunting needs very well! if you would like to shoot deer with the .243 is really the only choice. IMHO

.223 is great and arguably the most popular caliber for all kinds of varminting. .243 will have more authority at all ranges and is a more versatile rig.
If your considering a .22cal, why not move it up to a .22-250rem, .220swift or a .223wssm, the latter two are a bit more rare, but hotter then all get out
For coyotes go with .223, you will have more fun shooting with less recoil and less noise= more shooting practice. Forget shooting at coyotes 350yds. and beyond coyotes are small targets, a little wind and you will miss. Shooting 400yds + is best left to guys with the right rigs and long range pratice. If you stick to around 300 yds. with a .223 you will have lots of fun.
My favorite coyote round was the .220 Swift but in all reality a .223 works just as well in the right hands and is most cost effective. Im also a big fan of the smaller .204 with a 39 gr. Blitzking.
What are the calibre restrictions in your neck of the wood. Regs here in NL states that only .22 calibre centrefire rounds for coyotes. Not allowed to use .243 and bigger, unless you shoot one on a big game license.
For varmints coyote size & smaller, the .223 is what you want. Ammo is varied & easy to find. I like the Hornady Vmax loads for coyote. The frangible bullet usually explodes in the animal without an exit hole. I hunt in populated areas & you don't have to worry about ricochets with frangible bullets.
