I had the great pleasure of buying my 5 year old son his first rifle yesterday.

He got a new Savage Rascal, and he picked the colour.

Got it out to the range today, and he looks to be a natural. Now Dad needs a .22!

They are great beginner rifles, both of my boys each have one. Great fun for the whole family. Also creates a great opportunity to teach firearm safety at a young age.

I am very jealous! I hope to be able to provide the same opportunities for my children when I have them in the future...you are an awesome father from what I can see!

great to see the next gen. at the range, both my girls learned on a rascal, great learner rifle. I mounted a vortex sparc red dot and it made a big difference to there ability to acquire the target and get a shot off quickly. I also adjusted the trigger as low as possible, pulling a 3 lb trigger on a 2.6lb rifle isn't easy to to without moving the gun around in the process. Snap caps are a great way to practice his shooting at home, my girls would set up stuffies and pretend to shoot them. at home is a break them of any unsafe habits before your at the range. I hope he continues to enjoy it, shooting with the kids is the a lot fun.

Thanks guys. It was a freaking hoot. I can't wait to get back up there with him. I have a Vortex Strikefire that'll probably go on it once he gets the hang of the irons. That's a skill I want him to get down before we move to optics. I can tell you, waiting until he was 5 has been hard, but I definitely think he's ready for it, under very close supervision of course. His mom is a bit nervous, but once she sees him shoot, I'm sure she'll relax a bit! It all started when he saw those Battleship targets in the garage and asked to his mom if he could shoot one. He had his rifle the next day. I've always planned that he'd be a shooter, and if he continues to be excited by it, I'm pretty sure he'll never be able to afford to get in trouble.
