hi all i was wondering i have a friend from england coming along, and two other army buds comming out for a hunt the fall. I am new to northern Alberta been posted here 2 years ago with the army, last fall i went up to whitecourt I got one buck but it took me a while i was a little disapointed i spent alot of time walking about in the bush with little to no success, I am used to hunting in open country in southern Saskatchewan where there is fewer places the deer are but long shots are key. this year i am determind to be more lucky I got some cam nets and grunt calls as i figure still hunting might work better ie watching over a meadow on a high feature down wind, we are heading up to whitecourt from Nov 8-12 does anyone have any good advise or tactic for this type of place, lots of trees some open meadows but mostly bush in mid November any info apreciated

Run through the bush screaming like a little girl and have your buddies shoot what runs out.:D

seriously though: ( please check regs first ) In the bush here in northern Sask a lot of fellas put stands over bait or on major trails etc. Scout your area to see where there is activity and set up accordingly. If the land is relatively flat or rolling walking through the brush just pushes the deer and you often never see them unless you can organize a drive. Setting up a stand seems to be the best approach is this type of situation. In more mountainous terrain walking may be more affective as you can get above the game and see more.

good luck

I used to quietly tip toe along longging roads, with limmited success then I found something that really works. Tinks smokin' sticks, Guarendamntee that you'll get a deer using them. I can't remember the 2 types but I put the rut scent out about 50 yards from where I sit (in the open) and use the other type as a cover (it smells like cherry). Last year I had 2 bucks come upto the sticks after they came charging upto me. Shat my pants as they came in full steam ahead and only stopped about 15 feet from me, snortin' and stompin' the whole time. I dove for a tree to hide behind cause I thought they were going right through me.

jc: just looked them up can get them at basspro, looks like walmart amazon.com and such (walmart might be just for the states)

they look like incense sticks from the images on basspro's site. you set them up light them and they smoke giving off rut smell it seems.

gonna hafta pick a pack up this year for where i go hunting.

you should be able to find the BuckExpert smoke sticks at almost any hunting store

Be very careful with the foreigner and the out-of-province hunters. Read the regulations for dates, species and licencing for them. You might (gulp) need to use an outfitter for the Brit', or have different opening dates amongst the three classes of hunter. Check with the fish cops to be double sure. If they can't carry a rifle, dress them up in colours and bring them along as labourers and field dressers.

dont worry already got the papers in order

For best results, use a 5 gallon pail tipped upside down to make a smoke stack of sorts. Ignore the directions they give you to make them, as it lets out way to much smoke. I use (4) 1/2 half inch holes to let air in at the part closest to the ground and (6-10) 1/4 inch holes at the top to let the smoke out. Also try setting it up under a heavy spruce bow, it should hold the scent even longer than the pail method. Just be carefull not to set anything on fire. When your done pack your gear into the pail and the smoke that is stuck to the inside sticks to your gear providing the ultimate cover scent.
