Best entry level 1911

Hi,

I'm in the market for 1911's. I know this is not the only thread about 1911, but couldn't find the specific answer i was looking for. I'd may get into IPSC.

What I'm looking for:

- 700-800$ range;
- .45 acp;
- Interchangeable parts with others 1911;
- Best quality/price ratio.

So far I'm looking at:
- STI spartan
- Para 1911 GI Expert
- Rock island armory 1911
- Springfield 1911 Milspec

Any hints?

I would have to say the Springfield Armory. Springfield has great customer service, and their 1911 frames and slides are both hammer forged steel. Where as the RIA and STI feature cast frames. Don't get me wrong both STI and RIA make great guns at that price point...but you still can't beat all hammer forged in my opinion.
 
For me it'd be a Spartan, no question (especially one tuned from Armco). I owned one in 9mm that was very accurate and reliable.
 
If you go into IPSC, there is absolutely no reason to get .45ACP. The new "classic" division (where the single stack guys are not at a disadvantage with their 8 round mags) scores both major and minor. To shoot major, all you need is .40s&w.....why put up with the recoil and cost of a .45 when you don't get any extra points for it? Minor is still the 9mm, which I see more and more of in the "classic" division. It's your choice in the end, but IPSC seems to have disavowed itself of the .45. Maybe to please it's European participants, where the .45 is not easily available/cost prohibitive?

If you do decide to get it in .45ACP because you're not going to use it in IPSC, my vote out of the ones you mentioned is the Springfield. I hear good things about their product, and their CS. I don't hear good things about Para (stuff like "run...don't walk away from them"). I owned a Sig and while it shot well enough, it wouldn't fit into a standard 1911 holster (you have to use Sig's for some reason). Got a S&W 1911 and much prefer it over the Sig I had.

In the end, try and handle each one if you can and buy the one that feels best in your hand; how does it point, how are the sights for you, how does it balance in your hand, etc....

This pretty much sums up what every thread about "choose a 1911" ends up like.

I predict the "get 2 Norincos for that price" will show up somewhere between post 10 and 30.

Just sayin'. ;)
 
The Sig 1911 is the best money you'll spend. I almost sold mine, and I thank God everyday that both "buyers" fell through. Never again will I risk putting my precious up on the chopping block. I'll sell my wife before my Sig 1911.

Buying it direct from Armco is the best bet...off the EE is a second option if the seller is honest. Gunnar's work on mine reduced the pull to a crisp 3.5 lbs pull.

I really like SIG 1911s but their price is still significantly higher than $700-$800...even for the lowest end models.

I've not got a TLRs1 mounted on the rail, but have not updated my pictures of it yet.

I have not had a failure to fire that wasn't a result of something I did. I broke a couple magazines, so when the base plate fell out, it's hard to blame the pistol itself.

When I reassembled it incorrectly and put the series 80 firing pin safety lifter in wrong, that was my fault.

Once I sorted out my mistakes, I have not had another problem with it. I've fed it a diet of underpowered .45ACP reloads (EDIT: Corrected: 767fps avg, std. dev 19.5, span 66.4, 230gn plated ball) and it always locks back on an empty magazine and always goes bang. It really likes the Hornady Tap P+ hollow points. I've put probably close to 2k through it now, I use grease for lubricating.

I really like SIG 1911s but their price is still significantly higher than $700-$800...even for the lowest end models.

Sigs are not much more. You can get a Tacops for $1100 . I bought my Nitron Rail for $1000
 
Ruger SR 1911 hands down... no competition at that price point.
Epps had it for 600 dollars.


I can't believe that nobody mentioned it yet.

It is hard to get, but not impossible.

If you want to get one, I suggest putting order with one of the CGN retailers.

Murdoc from Arma Coat firearm finishes is bringing several orders of Ruger SR1911 to Canada.

PM Murdoc and you will have it within reasonable amount of time.
 
I was eyeing the "Sig 1911 XO" for $869 at Cabela's but thought it must be the bottom of the line for Sig 1911's. Anyone buy one?

I love my German Sig 220 in 45acp, don't think I need a 1911.

Ruger SR 1911's for $750 at Arma-Coat. Had a batch, think they are all spoken for. Not easy to find.
