Best F-Class Calibre for open competition

My calibre of choice would be a 7mm and cartridge wise I really like the 7-6.5PRC however if you want to get less custom a 284 would be a solid choice.

6mm is getting really good but I don’t think they buck wind as well and you will have to be really good with wind calls!

Prowl the results sheets from as many Canadian matches as you can find. Look for trends and top finishers. You essentially need a 1000yd centrefire that can manage wind, after that it is almost every competitor for themself.

For selection in bullets alone I would stick with a 308 caliber rifle.
Easier on the shoulder too after 100 round day.
My open was a Savage F Class 6.5-284 wearing a NightForce NXS 5.5-22 x56
Only Guys ( while mostly ) shooting a 308 including myself in F class is in F TR. where we HAVE to use a 223 or 308 as Only those 2 cartridges are allowed .While the 308 is a GREAT Cartridge its not as good at the LR F class shooting as the 7 mm cartridges but Does hold up Well for the shorter range matches .The 6.5x284 is a Great cartridge and I have one of those too BUT barrel life is significantly shorter with HP 6.5 cal cartridges . As far a s 22 power scope goes you must have the BEST Eyes of anyone .MOST ? Guys are using max 55-60 power scopes .
Im a 338 LM 300gr man myself lol
That will BUCK the Wind 💨 BUT beat the Hell out you ! lol 😂 RJ

Dipping my toe into F-Class, and I went with 284 Winchester. This was after a bit of research, and then stumbling into nice deal for a complete 284 package (rifle, brass, dies, projectiles, and load data) - just needed to add a scope.
What is the rifle build ? What scope you thinking ? 🤷🏼‍♂️
I have a Delta Stryker HD 5-50 x56 DLS-3 MOA on my 284 F open and I like it . 👍

It looks like 6.5 Creedmoor is a good starter calibre for this game, with lots of quality rifles, ammunition, parts, components, and information available. In some obscure optimal calibre you may have to spend too much time chasing down the bits you need, and you've got to already know what you're doing to see the better performance increment. And by the time you're a player you'll need a backup rifle.

Meanwhile I've been hearing that .223 is getting a lot more love in the TR game, partly because of primer and other component shortages, but I'm in awe of the wind wizards who can find a v-bull way out there with that!

l believe 338 LM is not allowed under the f class rules (8 mm maximum).
Even if it was its way to expensive to shoot
and due to no muzzle break being allowed in f class world this makes it uncomfortable for shooting all day.

Don't get me wrong it a great caliber for long range shooting but not for F Class discipline.
