whats the best facotry ammo for an enfield (yes i kno you should slug the barrel and load accordingly but dont have a press yet) i plan to use this gun mostly at the range for now.

any opinions?

S&B 174 gr (I think it's 180 gr now) FMJ ammo. It's on the same cost as soft point, but it shoots well and is accurate. My Ross (before I sold it) would do 1/4" groups at 100 yrds.

I would suggest finding whatever shoots most accurately and using that for hunting and drilling holes in paper too.:sniper:

The caveat was for rifles that have been shot extensively with cordite ammunition. Throat erosion from the hotter burning cordite will cause poorer accuracy with boat tails. I think a lot of No5's have either not been shot very much or used powder instead of cordite ammo. They did come along late in WW2 and of course never saw WW1.
Oh by the way, if you reload, S&B cases seem to not last as long as others from what a lot of folks have said.

What you DO NOT want is a boat tail bullet.

I have never had a problem shooting No1MkIII*'s with either brand. If the bore is in good shape there should be not issue. If you want flat based bullets I believe Winchester has a 180gr SP with a flat base.

However if bore condition and dia is the issue (i.e. 314" vs. .311 or .312") then no factory ammo is suitable. Moving to cast or an over sized bullets which are not available in factory ammo.

Which ammo had the boat tail in WWII?

I'm gonna try Winchester SuperX power point in mine, i'll let you know how it work's. $23 bucks at Wal-Mart.

yea i grabbed a box or so today of wincheser power point, federal blue box, and core lokt and il look for some seller and bellot FMJ and prvi at epps next week....

Regarding Boat Tail bullets, A LOT of ppl shot MkVIII ammo in Enfields just fine and it is boat-tail. If the bore is in good shape, have at 'er.

By ww2, most ammo is/was nitro-cellulose, not cordite. Cordite erosion is usually a symptom on early guns - but not always. Depends how hard it was used.
