Best Factory Ammo For A Savage 10FP - 308

I bought a Savage FP10 in .308 3 years ago, I love it! Shoots sub moa with most factory ammo. If your going to try out your new Savage buy some 150gr powerpoints by Winchester they seem to shoot as good as any. I hand load for mine I shoot everything from 125gr TNT for gophers to 168gr Hornady A-max for the long ranges. Great gun!

 $91..... a few more $$$ and you could pick up a Lee anniversary kit and make your own

Mine shot the Fed 168gn match well but I have been able to get better accuracy out of reloading. Plus, I can reload 20 accurate rounds for way less than $40 a pop.
I was loading 155 gn Amax with great accuracy out to 300yds BUT at 400 and 500 yds they would key hole. The 10FP with the 1 - 10" twist just doesn't spin the lighter bullets fast enough to keep them stable at longer range. My LE2B loves the Hornady 178 gn Amax bullets. I think you'll find that the heavy bullets really work well in these rifles.

I know guys that are shooting 155 Amax bullets out to 1000 yards in 1:14 twist barrels without a problem. Why would you think a 1:10 doesn't spin them fast enough.

Wow this is an old thread!!!

Start reloading your groups will be tight and you can tune the round to the rifle. My 10fp makes single holes at 100 yards depending on how well I'm shooting that day. You can buy a lee loading kit and the dies and away you go. It costs me about $10 for 20rnds. Its also fun to load.

1:14 twist barrels have been shooting 147-155 gr bullets out to 1000 yards since the military switched from .303.

Correct me if I’m wrong but the length of the bullet will determine spin rate needed to stabilize. Longer the bullet in relation to diameter faster rate needed to stabilize and improve accuracy. 143 in 303 should be shorter so it doesn’t need faster twist rate to stabilize. 1/10 twist rate on 308win which is what my 10fp has means that in theory a longer bullet will be more stable on exiting the barrel and should translate into improved accuracy

My 10FP LE2B absolutely dislikes Federal GMM. Gave 4-5" groups at 100 yards. I shoot handloads only. You need to pony up the cash for a reloading setup and ditch the factory ammo.

Mine shoots 168 AMax into .5 MOA or just under.

If you are a real shooter you will save money in the long run and be alot happier.

Spin rate does not determine accuracy. In fact, spinning a bullet too fast will make it shoot worse.

Any bullet 190gr and under will live happily with a 12twist at 308 velocities. The barrel and load will determine how close the bullets snugly together.

The 10 twist is enough to stabilize the 240gr MK so a stubby 180gr bullet doesn't need anywhere near this twist. The 155gr Amax can live happily with a 13 or 14 twist.

Max, the only way to know which factory ammo shoots best in your pipe is to buy a bunch and test. Unfortunately, that costs a good chunk of change and to keep shooting enough to burn out the pipe will cost you a small fortune.

Good luck with your rifle.

Check the date of the original thread......................

I gave up on factory ammo and will get set up for reloading. Too many things on the go and and not enough $$ to go around.

Its the only way to go the lee clasic press can load up to 50cal and it will not break the bank. Call higgson powder.
