I have a few USArmy service and Tech manuals, but they mainly deal with basic field stripping, not barrel replacement or gauging.
Now that I am starting my "stripped receiver build", I would like a good book to guide me.

Is The U.S. .30 Caliber Gas Operated Service Rifles: A Shop Manual, Volumes I & II ,by Jerry Kuhnhausen the best, or should I consider others?

thanks

Yes it is. Another book for information is Canfield's new book The M1 Garand Rifle. It is bigger than the Vancouver phone book!

I have the new Bruce Canfield book and it is great.
But although it is a great history reference, it has no info on rebuilding.

hi
i only have the Kuhnhausen book ... got it for my m1a but its just as indepth for the garand .. I got two garand receivers for a future build and i'm extremely confident that i won't need any other literature

its money well spent... got mine from brownells

I've used the Kuhnhausen book for more than 15 yrs and it has been my guiding light for many Garand builds, re-builds, repairs and trouble shooting. It is the best there is and is a very wise investment for any Garand owner or aspiring re-builder. The Kuleck booklet is useful as well, but be careful of his advice on barrel installation. He states that the optimum hand tight position for barrel installation is 7:30 o'clock or 45 degrees off vertical index. That's way to far off for installing a new barrel boys and girls. Kuleck also advises that bolts be lapped to fit. This is gilding the lily as Garand bolts were never lapped in original manufacture or military overhauls.
