So here I am, looking to buy my first Glock...

There is so many models and generations that I need your opinion.

I want to buy a Glock for CQB competition and it will also be my SHTF pistol.

I'm pretty sure I want a Glock 17 but which gen ?

I want too leave the gun bone stock without any modification.

The front rail won't see any use.

I don't have really big hands so the finger grooves on the gen 3 and 4 don't bother me.

Which generation of Glock 17 is in your opinion the best in stock configuration ?

Also US or Austrian ?

They don't change enough things between gens to make much of a difference. Buy the cheapest one you can find...

Gen 4

I'm a fan of the finger groves and the texture of the Gen 3 isn't good.

If you're indifferent on the finger grooves, then go with a Gen 5. The trigger is a little better and the finish on the slide is really good.

I love Gen 2’s, but Gen 5’s are better in every way, with one exception, the slides are locked much tighter when in battery and are harder to manipulate. It’s more of a dry fire issue than anything, and the tighter lockup is a good thing; I’ve shot my best 25 yard groups with my Gen 5.

Gen 5 all the way here

Owned 1 gen 3
2 gen 4s,
And 2 gen 5s,

The gen 5 definitely prints the tightest on target,
Which is the only thing that matters to me.

Interesting choice...

I find Glocks can be a a bit slippery as do many people so they try stippling, skateboard tape, Talon grips, etc. Once you grab the RTF2 frame, that gun is not going to move anywhere! I also find the Gen 3 frame puts my trigger finger in the right location, the Gen 4 is too small and the finger grooves are not in the right place for my hand.

I really like the Gen 4, but with work from Black Box Customs, the undercut on the trigger guard will give you a touch higher overall grip on the frame. I have smaller hands too, and was not much of a Glock fan until I had this done on a frame, and now it is the go to for me on EVERY Glock frame of mine. Certainly worth the money!
