Best goose calls

Buy yourself a short reed style call along with a cd/dvd instructional video. You can't beat a Buck Gardner brand poly-carb call for ease of use and learning before stepping up into something a bit better. Best to figure out on the lower priced calls just how much air various calls require to use then once you have it down pat you can try higher end calls in the store to find something that suits your calling style and ability. Another thing is learning how to tune a call is much less expensive with poly carbs. You can trash a few of them as opposed to 1 Acrylic or higher end wood call for the same price. Learning to call and delving into tuning can be alot of fun. Don't get discouraged if it takes a while to catch on and the best teachers are the geese themselves so if you have a park nearby with geese go sit and listen. Bring your call, try to mimic them. It can be a real hoot. Especially the looks on passerby's faces! Lol

Everything Spank said is accurate. If you want inexpensive calls to learn on, I would recommend a Knight & Hale magnum clucker and a Mick Lacy grand slam short reed call. Both calls will be in the $25 range and from my experience with them, they work very well. The magnum clucker is a plastic call that gives higher pitched calls and the Mick Lacy call is a wood call with deeper tones. I've been using both calls with great success for many years. Are they the best calls on the market? No. But I've learned how to become a very effective caller on both calls. And since I've had success with them, I haven't had a need to replace them with anything more expensive. My K&H call was purchased in 2005 and I believe my Mick Lacy call was purchased in 2009, so they have some good mileage on them

Use your own voice, I don't use any goose calls; just my voice. The calling is more clear and carries further from your natural voice than blowing in a tube.

How do you double cluck, murmur, plead etc? I am truly curious?

1963beretta.....I did not realize K&H were still around or I'd have recommended them too. My first short reed was a Magnum Clucker. Great little call. Stay away from the double clucker plus though! Its a nightmare!!

When using my voice it's just a matter of lots of practice; so how do I myself produce a honk or double cluck etc. Let's see if I can explain this as easy as possible.

When you go into a hunting store and you see a new product and get excited you might say "Ooooo look at this", it's the "Ooooo" that you need for part one; the second half of the call to complete it the word closest to the honk is "wok" but I add an extra "o"; "wook". Just like saying "wookie" but with no "ie" at the end.

So you start with "Ooooo" and end with "wook". The "Ooooo" needs to start off high(not a high pitch)and swing low and back to the high, like a child on a swing, they start high swing low and then high. Once you come back to high, push a quick "wook" that needs to be louder or twice as loud as the "Ooooo" You can lengthen the "Ooooo" longer or shorter.

You need to do this from your diaphragm and it needs to be loud, "Oooooo wook"

A double cluck is faster and can vary with a short "Ooo" a fast "wook" and a even faster "wook" right after: "Ooo" "wook" "wook"
or two quick "wook"s one right after another, I also add low growl in between etc. "wook" growl "wook" but it needs to be quick

Hope this helps explain how I call geese using my voice without a goose call, everyone does it in their own way and like everything else it takes a lot of practice.

Tim grounds calls. Hands down. There is a reason why tim and hunter grounds are so well known in the circuit. All the Champs use the super mag. Look it up.
There are lots of good calls. I have had good success with the zink power clucker 2, Molt Gear ex1, but if you want a great call get a tim grounds. Call him up and he will even help you out with choosing the right one.

x2 but I use the Primos Goose Flute for the deeper tones. Purist disdain, but effective. and cheap. I'll buy better when I get better but I'd always keep a flute on the lanyard - she gives the softest moans.

and lots of YouTube videos - bag grammer etc.

Voice calls can be very effective ... a visit with the Cree around James Bay/Hudson's Bay, and a few of the "Lonestar" lads down around Katy & Eagle Lake TX will soon convince you.

By all means, pick up an instructional cd/dvd/tape ... I learned in part from a vinyl 45 rpm record (yeah, I'm an ol' fart) and in part from some good callers. Practice, practice, practice. A call is really just like a reed musical istrument. You won't play well with only a weeks practice !
No matter how good you get, (or think you are) with whatever call you decide on ... don't overdue the calling !

I've got a Sean Mann Eastern shore man flute. Like it. Makes it easy for a guy like me to sound half decent.

Today I purchased a Zink calls power clucker for my nephew who is taking part in his first hunting season. The call was on sale for $20 at Cabela's and it works extremely well. I may have to return to purchase another!

I use a zink call of death. I'm no pro by any means but I really like it so far. It stays in my truck and gets blown for practice 1/2 hour too and half hour from work every day. The instructional video it comes with is excellent as well.

1963Beretta,

good luck for your nephews first season. He is going to have some great memories.
My little lad has been tagging along duck hunting for quite a few years. This year he came of age and passed his hunters course. He got his first goose on Waterfowl Heritage day.
I will check out that Zinc call for him. Old picture but they grow fast.

I bought one and so did a buddy of mine. His sounds good and mine is brutal. I finally got it tuned as best I could and it still was terrible. I gave it to my kids to play with.

To the original poster. I would buy a Faulks long reed and one of the short reeds that others have recommended. The Faulks H-100 I have doesn't sound the best but it's super easy to blow. It's nice to fall back on when I'm having problems with my short reed. That's my two cents. I now use my short reed 90% of the time.
