what are your thoughts?I've always used a regular bolt action .22 with a 4X bushnell. But I'm thinking of maybe a short barreled 22 with a red dot might be even better.Ranges aren't long-25 to 50 yards max.Since we can't carry handguns in the bush , something light enough to carry on a back pack sling when packing a bigger rifle.Even a single shot .22 like the Savage Rascal might work fine, although the Stevens 300 would also be in the running

I'll have more insight on this question in about 8 weeks time! :) My daughter is taking her PAL/Hunter's ed in the next few days, and her rifle is a Savage Rascal with a fixed 3x Bushnell scopechief. Super light set-up, but I think if you're even remotely adult-sized, you'll find the LOP impossibly short.

I always use a 20ga. shotgun, but have been invited to a buddy's camp this fall where I'm told there are lots of birds, none of them spooky. :) So, I'm re-scoping my Anschutz 1450 for that trip, a light/small bolt action. I have a Norinco Backpacker that might come along too...small, short and not too heavy. So, daydreaming aside...I think if you want to keep it super-minimal/small/light a Rascal with it's stock lengthened might be the ticket. Scope bases are VERY close together with this gun, so pick your scope carefully. (thinking eye relief)

HA! I was in your exact same shoes a couple months ago. Trying to build a grouse gun... I ended up with a Ruger 10/22 synthetic stainless with Tech Sights. I debated a red dot for a while... figured I wanted to go old school with iron sights.

I also have a scoped (4-16x) Sako Quad in .22lr, .17hmr, and .17mach2 so that weighed into my decision. I figured if I want to get fancy and snipe those delicious birds from a distance, I could use that. But for a short-range, back of the truck kinda gun... ruger 1022 with tech sights it is. Can't wait for October 1st now!

I was lucky enough to find an older model Savage 24 with .22 and 20ga, but if you can't find one the newer Savage 42 with .22 and .410 would be about perfect for your grouse setup

22LR headshots or shotgun 12/16/20/.410 will work, bows/crossbows with appropriate tips (blunt/wire) too. For ammo selection in shotguns we would be looking at #4 or 6 non-lead (ideally) pellets I believe.

Check provincial hunting regs for authorized weapons. This may vary by zone and time of year.

I've shot a lot of grouse when I've been out looking for grouse with a .22.But I've also passed up a whole lot more because I was packing a bigger rifle and didn't have my .22.What I'm thinking of is something light enough to sling on your back when you're hunting for bigger game.Because of the noise factor-a subsonic .22 or even a CB Long would work just fine at typical sub 25 yard grouse ranges. While we can't carry handguns in Canada , a short .22 rifle might even be an advantage over a handgun for accuracy.

You can carry a hand gun if its an air gun. check out some of the .22 cal pellet pistols they make great little grouse guns.

10/22 with bushnell trs-25 red dot and 8" barrel in the factory stock is non-restricted and that's about as small/light as it gets for a semi with an optic. That's my setup, and I run a sling swivel ontop of the stock directly behind the receiver for a Perfectly balanced single point sling carry. I can walk all day with it on my back and a hunting rifle in my hands. I don't even realize its there till I need it!

Here's my grouse gun. 11.5" ER shaw barrel and leupold FX-II 2.5x20mm ultralight. Carry it all day with no problems. Very content with this set up. :D

I am a big fan of red dots, this rifle wore one for YEARS before I changed the barrel.

Reinstated? You a scofflaw or something? ;)

Apparently infractions NEVER expire....so counting the ones I got ohhhh....7 freakin years and 8 THOUSAND posts ago....they added up to making the last one worth a 6 month suspension from the EE and OT.

Get this: BECAUSE they never expire, if I get ONE more, even if it's TEN YEARS from now, it's a year.

Everybody keeps asking where the long time active members went? Now you know...thank the retarded non-expiring infraction system here. And yes, admin knows about it...and doesn't care.

Interesting.
I got a pretty lame unwarranted infraction a few years ago but didn't worry to much as I figured it would go away with time.

The Henry mares leg .22 is a nice small repeaters that works well with CB's. you just need to get used to shooting it without the full stock which isn't too bad for minute of grouse.
The Henry mini is a small lightweight single shot option.

Those scouts are nice too!

Nice-the criteria here is:
[a]ease of carry
light weight
[c]minute of grouse head accuracy[1''] up to 25 yards,50 yards would be a long shot

If I was going for a walk looking for grouse,I'd carry one of my other .22's-a BRNO #4,but for this application it would be a second rifle carried on my back while deer/moose hunting and loaded with subsonics or CB longs[not sure if a short barrel would work with those, and probably they wouldn't cycle in a semi automatic]

What stock is that? You're making me reconsider a 10/22.
