Best grouse set up...

What stock is that? You're making me reconsider a 10/22.

It's a butler creek target stock that's been sanded down/checkering removed. Gives it a nice brushed finish.

once upon a time it looked like this:

Ruger 10/22 Deluxe (no barrel band) and a 1.75-5x32mm Bushnell Trophy scope.
Bushnell scopes are OK for 22s but I shy away from them for high power guns.
The 22LR kills em dead with head/neck shot and no lead BBs in body to poison me or break my teeth.

yes, there was a good reason the trappers like the Nylon 66-lightweight, accurate and reliable.I got mine from an old rancher up in Smithers-it was his ''go to'' gun.Its just a tad too long for slinging on your back when carrying another rifle though

I remember those old guns. One version was brown and the other was black.
I don't know if there was any other differences in the two versions other than color.
I never bought one mainly because I liked the Ruger 10/22 a lot better for aesthetic reasons.
The 66s were supposed to be incredibly tough and reliable.
I think the magazine adds said 10,000 shots without a jam.

I've never weighed my Norinco JW15A, but it has to be around 3x the weight of a Savage Rascal. Love it though! :) I'd urge the OP to try and get his hands on one (Rascal)~amazingly small/light. As for a highly modified ($$$) Ruger 10/22 shorty as this secondary/lightweight/incidental grouse gun? Not sure.

I was lucky enough to find an older model Savage 24 with .22 and 20ga, but if you can't find one the newer Savage 42 with .22 and .410 would be about perfect for your grouse setup

This is about the ideal. I had a 410 and 22 combo but found the 410 lacking in the tight bush grouse inhabit up in the north. 20 would be great.

It sounds silly, but I bought my boy a Henry Mini-Bolt. It's a single shot stainless synthetic bolt 22 that's very tiny! The thing is crazy accurate even with the gaudy stock sights, so both my wife and I use it all the time for squirrel removal, rabbits and grouse.

It's small, light, easy to carry and very accurate. It comes hunting every trip!

I bought my grandaughters a savage rascal[pink!] and it occurs to me this might be the ideal ''backpacker'',light, accurate, peep sight, adjustable trigger and being a bolt action will shoot subsonics that an automatic might not cycle. The LOP is too short for an adult-but perhaps adding spacers like the Mossberg ''youth model''20 gauge shotgun might be an option.Being a single shot isn't too much of a handicap-and it makes for a lighter rifle[about 3 lb]You can generally pick one up used for about $150

Ever look at a Browning Buckmark rifle? The sporter is 4.5 pounds and is a very handy little rig. Has intergral scope rail for mounting optics. Takes normal 10 round Buckmark pistol mags too.

Ya, it (5.7 lbs) is heavier than the Rascal (2.95 lbs.) and my Marlin 795s (4.5 lbs.) too. I was thinking of trying to find a lighter stock for it because the shorter length (with full size stock) is so nice in dense brush...

I haven't checked the Rascal[my grandaughters who I bought it for don't live here]but I wonder if the stock could accomodate spacers to lengthen the LOP,like the youth model Mossberg shotgun comes with.If it did-the Rascal would be pretty close to ideal.

If you change your stance quite a bit and shift your shoulder forward the youth .22's work well for adults.
If you can handle the recoil... :)
