A friend of mine owns a horse rescue. She also has about 25 chickens for eggs. Every year when the weather starts to get cold the local coyote population comes to her farm regularly for dinner.

Two days ago, at 5:30pm while it was still daylight, they (pack of approx 5)came and took 4 chickens. The owner was home, saw them coming through the new sand ring/outdoor arena she just built, so tried to bang pots and yell at them, but nothing would scare them away.

They came back 2 hours later and grabbed a few more.

At this point she wasn't letting the chickens out of the coupe, but she likes her chickens to be free range.

So, she knows I own guns, and was asking be about getting her license. She's going to do the course I did (guns.to) and get her non-restricted license. Her next questions was a little more difficult.

What gun can she use against a pack of 5 coyotes? I'm not sure if she wants to kill them or scare them, but I assume kill.

I was thinking shotgun with buckshot, but I'm not sure how close she wants to get to them.

The gun will be stored in a locked locker in the barn, so it'll have to be heavy duty and "rust resistant", lol.

I was thinking:

Remington 870 tactical, SpecOps stock (she's a little short, LOP adjustable would be great), aftermarket Ghost Ring sight setup (she's used those sights on my friends Benelli and she was very accurate with them).

Or the 870 Marine Magnum:

Get a specops stock for it, ghost rings, would be good.

I'm not sure 00buckshot at 50m would be lethal to a coyote? I'm not sure if she'd be very accurate with slugs at that range.

The largest rifle caliber she can shoot on her farm is .223. Remington 7615p maybe?

Wilson Combat® Ghost Ring/XS® Sight
SpeedFeed® IV Buttstock, R3® Recoil Pad
RAMAC 6477 – (14" LOP SFIV) • RAMAC 6479 – (13" LOP SFIV-S)

Maybe red dot, maybe scope.

hmmmm, the choices.

A accurate centerfire 22 , with good optics, and an OLT call. :D
That would trim down the population quickly :D Using a call would be called hunting right? She wants to fit under predator control ;)

I was trying to stay away from semi. Stored in a barn, pulled out in freezing cold temperatures, I would like it to function ;)

i,m sure a few gun nutz could help her out;) there is always a posting around with people looking for a place to shoot..
but is it ok with the area bylaws to discharge a fire arm, were she is?

Don't need much gun for coyote, I would be thinking 22 mag and you could get a used one 1/2 cheap. If you go centrefire, first question has to be how well can she shoot?? 223 is great, but if she can't shoot a yote past 100 yards, what is the use of spending the extra $$, go rimfire.

Forget the shotgun, guarantee you will never get close enough if you have a gun. No gun, they get brave. They are a lot smarter than you would think.

Where are the dogs?? Acreage with stock and no dogs to run of critters??? That doesn't make sense to me.

Buy her a 22 mag and a black lab.

An inexpensive Stevens or NEF Handi-Rifle in .223 or .22-250 would seem the best choice for her. (A .22 Mag is marginal for coyotes, especially in the hands of someone new to firearms, and the last thing she needs is something that may or may not work very well).

Get her a simple, foolproof bolt action Savage(or comparable) .22 mag. More range and less noise than a shotgun, wont spook her horses and other animals like a centerfire. She doesnt need much range if she is working within her farmyard. No need for shotguns or centerfires. Only a few coyotes, and they learn fast.
