I have shot quite a bit over the years and have a fairly good grasp on range/trap shooting but i am looking to find a firearm for my first hunt and for some target shooting. Im am completely green to what i should be looking for… any tips?

What will you be hunting, small or large game? Birds or four legged critters, do you want a modern rifle or something older? Irons or a scope, what’s your price range? These will all help you narrow it down.

There is no "Best" answer to your question.
Tell us what you intend to hunt and what $$ you can afford to spend.
The gun is the cheapest part of your quest, outfitting it will add $ to your purchase and feeding it ammo will also add$$.
Apply for access to the EE and do some window shopping along with some google research as to your possible choices.
Have fun !

Most of it will boil down to one of a few things:

- what are you hunting?
- where are you hunting it?
- how are you hunting it?
- what do you like?
- how much do you plan to spend?

There's such a wide net cast with your post that folks are going to chime in with whatever they like and in all fairness, they probably aren't wrong! But a Tikka in .308 might not be best for coyotes, and that is my "default" choice for new hunters.

IMO whatever you do, I'd steer clear of package guns in general. They've skipped on something to get the price where it is.

Since we don't know your budget or what your hunting. I'll just suggest get a Winchester model 70 feather weight. In what ever caliber you like. Could all ways get it in 243.win do a bit of deer and small game. The modern Winchester model 70's are some of the best built rifles for the price. I've shot a few and they consistently are the best built guns on the line when I see them at the range. Then put a leupold Freedom line either 2-7 or 3x9 on it. It will be light enough to carry sitting around 7 lbs.

First time hunter/shooter - my advice: 1. Fitment - find a gun (whatever action type you prefer) that fits you properly and is comfortable to hold, carry, and mount. 2. Caliber - I recommend a lighter recoiling calibers. 30-30, 243, 7mm-08, 6.5 Creedmore are great to start and effective for deer, coyotes. 3. Ammo - shoot different ammo to see what the gun likes. Once found, practice practice practice. Marlin, Savage, Howa, Tikka, Ruger, Winchester, Mauser all good places to start. When ready for an upgrade you can step it up to bigger and better, 270 Win, 280 Rem I highly recommend. Good luck in your search!
